Yelling and Hollering
Is Not Working!

At a recent trial, I
watched the scribe
turn around to the
audience (at a jump
height change) and
yell, "There are an
awful lot of you just
sitting up in the stands
when you could be
working!" This was
not said in a joking
manner nor was it said
nicely-it was said in
a very snide manner. I
realized later that day
that this woman was
the same person who chastised me (as a scribe) for
clarifying a judge's call at a trial a few months earlier.
I also recently heard a Chief Ring Steward say to exhibitors at the end of the day, "Shame on those of
you who did not work today." This was a person who
received a free trial entry to be a Chief Ring Steward.
So those of us who had paid to enter the trial were being chastised by someone who received a free entry.
At trials, most exhibitors have paid to be there and
do not have to work. It is strictly voluntary. In addition, we do not know what each exhibitor has going
on in their life (health, etc.) or why they do or do not
volunteer. It is strictly a personal decision each person gets to make. I generally do work, but if there is
yelling or chastising, I will not work!
I've seen blank white boards and classes being held
up because there are not enough workers. To me, this
is a sign that these clubs, 1) Do not have enough club
members to handle major jobs and 2) Are not offer-
ing enough incentives
for people to offer to
work.
There are many clubs
in our area who are
great and I will always work, whether
I get "paid" or not!
However, it is great
to be recognized in
some way for working and it makes me
more likely to work
for that club in the future. Here are examples of incentives offered by some of my local clubs:
off future trial entries for working 2 or
· 10%
more classes over the weekend (this club also
gives you tickets for a workers' raffle or food)
toward future entries or food con· Vouchers
cessions on site
· Free food/drinks all day
toward a workers' raffle that is drawn
· Tickets
each day
My favorite of these is the 10% off future trial entries. When this incentive is offered, you have to hustle to get your name on the white board before the
trial starts! The board is usually full before 8 a.m.,
and there is never any yelling for workers.
There has to be a kinder, gentler way to encourage
exhibitors to volunteer at trials because yelling and
hollering is not working!
