of #6. Facing the dog with a left arm cues the dog to drive to the reinforcement zone. As the dog commits to the refusal plane of #6, the change from a left to right arm cues the right turn to take #6 as illustrated in Figure 9. Getting to this threadle position also requires good foot speed. If the handler is unable to make the threadle position at #6, two rear crosses would be used from #5-#8. Upon exit of the tunnel, the handler would cue acceleration to the dog and the dog should drive across the refusal plane of jump #6. Committing to the refusal plane is a crucial skill we teach young dogs making sure they have equal value for obstacles and refusal planes. On commitment to the refusal plane, the handler would have run the diagonal line to cross the dog’s path; therefore, cueing the right turn as shown in Figure 10.

Figure 11 shows the rear cross at #6. This is quite a difficult rear cross due to the close proximity of the dog, handler, and jump. The handler must first, on completion of the first rear cross, rotate her shoulders enough to face the way she wants the dog to go to take #6. (The handler should be careful here to not over-rotate because this can teach the dog to not respond correctly to shoulder rotation; as in handler turns 90° but the dog only turns 45°). Whilst executing this shoulder rotation, the handler must be putting pressure on the rear cross diagonal line so on commitment to the jump she is in position to step across the dog’s line cueing the left turn to #7. Most issues on this course were from #4 to #7, with dogs either losing drive or earning refusals.
