Adaptogens are natural homeostatic metabolic regulators that help the body adapt to stress.
Some properties of most adaptogens are:

• Increases endurance
• Increases mitochondria function (energy building blocks of cells)
• Delays onset of fatigue
• Speeds up recovery from intense exercise and training
• Increases resistance to stressors
• Increases speed of healing and repair
• Balances the immune system
• Improves cardiovascular function and increases oxygen to the tissues
• Helps regulate blood glucose levels and cellular uptake
• Improves overall metabolic functions
• Regulates antioxidants and raises the antioxidant abilities under stressful conditions

Many different kinds of vegetables, fruits, and herbs are good adaptogens. Some
examples are: elderberry (also has collagen stabilizing capabilities which may be
beneficial to heal connective tissue injuries), blueberry, cranberry, apples, citrus
fruits, kale, broccoli, soybeans, legumes, parsley, Siberian and Korean Ginseng (ginsenosides), Rhodiola rosea, Schisandra chinensis, Ashwagandha, Ganoderma (Reishi
mushroom), Curcuma longa (turmeric), and Cactus grandiflorus.
The athlete should be properly conditioned and nutritionally prepared before competition. Increased metabolic, physical, and psychological demands on the body
results in the production of destructive free radicals. Feeding adaptogens and

antioxidants year round will help the
immune system and general health
of your dog. Increasing their amounts
about eight weeks before the intense
training and sport season will help to
improve endurance, work capacity under stress, and recovery after strenuous
activity. Studies show that glycogen
deficiency (associated with exercise
and stress) can increase cortisol levels
and ultimately cause damage to muscle tissue. So, you want to make sure
that the dogs have a balanced diet and
healthy lean muscle mass. Remember
that recovering from events and stress
is just as important as the conditioning and performances are. Also, these
antioxidants and adaptogens will help
delay the onset of fatigue which will ultimately decrease injuries. Basically the
goal is to counteract increased levels of
free radicals with increased levels of antioxidants and adaptogens to prevent
disease, to improve quality of life, and
increase longevity. D
