turn when the dog needs to be drawn
through a gap before the turn. Facing the
dog is much more eﬀective than a shoulder pull when pulling a dog through a
gap or past the plane of a jump. Figure 1
illustrates a lap turn.

Eye contact: The handler should use
direct eye contact to draw the dog toward her and then indirect eye contact in the new direction.

*

Footwork: The handler's feet should
be facing the dog and moving backward to draw the dog toward her. The
feet are then already facing the correct direction as the handler steps
into the dog to start the turn.

*

Hand signals: The handler initially
turns into the dog with an outside arm
and uses that arm to draw the dog
toward her. The hand should be low.
Shaking or moving the hand helps to
draw the dog's attention. Presenting
the hand with fingers up as if there was
a cookie in the hand is very eﬀective in
getting the dog's attention on the handler. This same arm is used to initiate
the turn away and this now becomes
the inside arm after the side change.

Verbals: The handler can use the
dog's name for attention before initiating the lap turn. The handler can
also use a trained verbal turn away
cue or directional if desired.

Cues for a Lap Turn
The cue combinations are as follows:

The lap turn is used in situations where the
handler wants to turn the dog away from
her with a side change. The turn is created
on the flat, meaning that the dog starts the
turn while he is on the ground and, as he
finishes the turn, his approach to the next
jump is at the angle he needs to jump.
Last month we covered the tandem turn
which is also used to turn the dog away
from the handler on the flat. The main difference between the lap turn and the tandem turn is that in the lap turn, the handler
is facing the dog as the turn is initiated. In
the tandem turn, the dog and handler are
facing the same direction. In general, the
lap turn would be used over the tandem

Motion: The handler initially moves
backward away from the dog to draw
the dog toward her and then she moves
into the dog's path.

Shoulders/Chest: The handler turns
into the dog, facing him to pull him toward her. The handler continues facing
the dog as the dog turns away from her.

Location/Position: The handler initially should be ahead of the dog's
path to draw the dog toward her. If
the dog is coming back toward the
handler, like after a wrap, then the
handler can be behind the dog to
start the turn. But, since the dog is
coming toward her, she is ahead of
the dog's path.
