Case Study 3:
Shoulders for Earrings
This could be one of a hundred stories... a lady approached the start
line at a seminar and started telling
me how her dog has no start-line
stay at trials; the dog gets really hyper and stressed and doesn't wait.
I asked her whether she was nervous or stressed, and she told me
she was not. But her raised shoulders and lack of a neck along with
her nervous energy and shallow
breathing, all suggested that, regardless of what she was consciously
aware of, her body was screaming
anxiety and her dog was picking up
on it. So we worked at her end of the
leash on getting her to relax (hint:
aim for psyched, not psychotic). As
we were doing that, her dog could sit,
wait, and keep waiting until mom was
ready to step out and begin. Despite
this lady's protests that she was fine
and there was no issue at her end of
the leash, there clearly was and her
dog was telling the tale.

It's not always the case, of course,
and sometimes issues really are at
the dog's end of the leash. But there
is a trifecta in our sport: handler-dog-
partnership. The danger is that we
don't give enough credit to the impact
we have on our dog. Now if you're
reading this and a mindset gremlin
wants you to feel bad about yourself or beat yourself up, ignore the
gremlin. There is no shame and no
blame in this, finding these things out
is just another part of our training and
it's also changeable, so take heart.

Case Study 4:
We're Nearly There... Argh!
This is another common occurrence,
and it's what I call the "preemptive
Hallelujah Chorus!" You know this
one-it is commonly seen after a
handler successfully negotiates a
tricky section on a course and has
a little "hallelujah" moment of relief,
during which time the next simple sequence goes awry. You can also see
it happen near the finish line where

someone feels like they're almost
home, when the dog quickly finds
an off-course or drops the last bar.
Now in obvious cases, the change
in handler intensity is obvious, such
as when the handler stops running
so hard during that final line of jumps
and you can sense their palpable relief that the end of the course is in
sight. But other times it is less of an
observable physical disengagement
and more subtly occurs at the mindset level.
A world championships competitor I
was working with recently was talking
about such an occurrence. They'd
had a couple of dropped bars at the
end of courses and it was a perplexing anomaly which have no technical
explanation. But what we worked out
was the handler was mentally disengaging. Even though the handler was
still physically running hard through
the finish, they were not keeping up
the same mental intensity and focus,
and the dog was sensing it.
