Cues for Running on the Dog's Line The elements of handling are as follows: * Motion: The handler's motion should be laterally into the dog's path and should include a rhythm change. In many, but not all cases, it should be parallel to the bar. * Chest/Shoulders: The chest and laser pointer should be open toward the dog while moving across the bar. To help the dog to jump rather than follow the handler's motion, it is important for the shoulders to be open toward the dog's landing spot. * Position: It is very important the handler is across the natural line for the dog by the time the dog reaches his takeoff point. * Eye Contact: The handler should have indirect eye contact with the dog and should look toward the dog's landing spot. * Feet: The feet should be pointed forward, in the direction of the dog's intended line as he lands. * Arm: When the dog is one stride away from takeoff, the handler should change her arm and bring her outside arm across her chest. This also helps the handler to point the chest laser pointer and her eyes toward the dog's landing spot. The handler should change back to the original arm when the dog lands. * Verbal: The handler can use the dog's name to get his attention. Training Start with a single jump, either set at a low height or with the bar on the ground. The handler should position herself on the far wing, across the dog's natural path. Place the toy in the landing spot or reward the dog upon landing. See Figure 5. Next the handler should position herself toward the inside wing and release the dog while moving toward the far wing.
