Both approaches to the A-frame were at a 90° angle, but the first proved no problem for most teams. The second approach came off a line of jumps that tended to pull the dog to the right and further flatten the approach. Many handlers found ways to get the dogs on the right somewhere along the line of jumps (either between jumps #13 and #14 or jumps #12 and #13) so they could then cross behind the dog as he approached the A-frame. Others used an opposite arm or body push left over jump #15 to help get the desired approach angle. Those that did a front cross leading into the weave poles were in a better position to manage the line of jumps leading to the A-frame. Some teams had an awkward time getting around the 180° turn from #6-#7-#8. Some handlers managed to set up a nice line coming off the A-frame as shown by the red path in Figure 4. This maneuver 5 8 7 6 4 gave the dog an angled approach to jump #6 and set up a yardage-saving turn around this section. Other dogs came off the A-frame and didn’t turn right away to the #6 jump, getting a path more like the orange path shown in Figure 4. Some handlers performed a front cross right off the A-frame, while others opted to do a rear cross between jumps #6 and #7 to pull the dog into the 180° turn. Either way worked fine as long as the dog and handler were in tune and the dog knew how to turn tightly when asked. Most handlers, no matter what handling they used to get through this section, ended up with the dog on the left for jump #9 to the weave poles. Overall, I really enjoyed this course as a Steeplechase finals, although if I had it to do over again I’d put the broad jump somewhere that it was less likely to catch dogs (and handlers) off guard. On this course the only place I see that it could go would be as jump #13, to the left of the existing jump. Since a broad jump needs a long straight approach, it wouldn’t help to put it exactly where the existing jump is, or the same approach problems would probably occur.
