Rachel Sanders has competed in agility since 1994, and with her Border Collie, Whist, and JRT, Trump, has won three USDAA Grand Prix of Dog Agility Championships and a Steeplechase Championship. Rachel and her BC Fable represented the U.S. at the 2008 IFCS World Championships in Belgium where they earned a silver medal. Obstacles #1-#5 I lead out and stand close to #3. After the dog lands jump #1, I move laterally into a front cross between #3 and #4. It is important to be clear of the wing of #4 and moving forward to cue extension to the #5 tunnel, not the right turn to the weave poles, as shown in Figure 9a. Another option for the lead-out is a lead-out push as in Figure 9b. For a push I stand on the landing side of #3. I use my shoulders facing the dog and my outside arm as the turning cues and my location on the landing side of the jump as the forward cues. In a lead-out push I always rotate 90°. I may choose a lead-out pivot for some lead-outs. I stand close to jump #4 but face the dog’s path for #1-#3 (this helps support the first three jumps just as I would in a gamble) as shown in Figure 9c. I rotate to jump #4 as the dog looks toward jump #3, but before he lifts for the jump. In a lead-out pivot I only rotate 180°. I use my location as the turning cue and my shoulders and inside arm as the forward cues. My choice of lead-out depends on several facts. Has the dog been trained to take three jumps when I stand that far away from him laterally? Will he turn over jump #3 using just my location as the cue for the turn (lead-out pivot)? Or will he need more physical turning cues, such as my shoulders and outside arm (lead-out push)? I need to be on the landing side of #4 moving forward to the tunnel. Can I accomplish that more easily by a using a moving lead-out? In my training I have timed these options for each of my dogs and know which type of lead-out each dog responds to best.
