Jigs will drive to the ball with the same enthusiasm as the cookie,
this is very valuable.
* Be Consistent: I'm sounding like
the dog trainer's mother now, right?
Establish criteria, be consistent. Yeah,
yeah, yeah, you think-Yeah! Yeah!
Yeah! I say! This means you need to
always release your dog from any position you put him in. Meaning, if you
told the dog to sit, down, or stand
(you did teach a stand-stay, right?)
he must always be released. This
includes (in a big way) everyday life,
not just in a training session! Don't let
your dog's training become situational. For example, maybe you need your
dog to sit for a moment while you
unload the groceries. You turn your
back and he follows you as you head
into the house, like a good dog. You
might be pleased that he "gets" what
you mean, need, and actually want.
But you are teaching him to look for
all the clues that could mean the stay
is over and, if you did not release with
a verbal command, those cues will be
physical ones. Those cues might be so
subtle in some cases that you might
not even understand what they are.
This is the birth of trouble. This is not
treating your stays and releases as if
they are the Holy Grail, to be sought
after and forever protected and
strengthened. Your job is to be a detective and hunt for what it is today
that your dog has determined means
he can break his position. Your job is
to teach each and every time you get
the chance to teach. The lesson is this:
you may only get up when you hear
the magic word.
News flash: You do not have to get
"tough" to teach; you just need to be
patient and teach. I'm not saying there

is never an exception to this, I'm saying be careful. Tough (meaning firm)
and mean (meaning mean) are not the
same thing.

The Magic Word
Some folks have multiple release words.
Like "break" means one thing and
"free" means another. I have had many
long conversations on this fascinating
subject and I still am not convinced
it is needed. I also believe that nonprofessional dog trainers should avoid
it like the plague. The idea is that the
dog knows when he is being released
to work, released to play, or released to
come to the handler. Brain hurting yet?
No? Give me a chance!
The question is this, "When I release
you, what are you supposed to do?
Keep working, run off and pee on
something, or get to me as fast as you
can?" Now remember, I'm saying I want
it to be easy and I want the dog or pup
to spring into action. This means I do
not want my dog to have to think. So
this is how I have solved it in my world;
my single release word "Break" ("OK!"
for many trainers) means this: You may
now have whatever you want. Period.
Sophisticated trainers reading this will
think "Yikes! I don't want that! She is oldfashioned and simple and just doesn't
get it." They are half right. I actually
think the same thing as the sophisticated trainers. I agree that I need other
words, but they are for other behaviors.
I already have other commands that
cover everything I need, and to not
use those commands when they apply
Do NOT hold the cookie directly over
the dog's head before you release. Your dog
will have to twist his body backward as he
leaps up--not what you want.
means they do not get strengthened by
using them as often as I can.
So, if "Break" means, "you may have
whatever you want," I must always
know what my dogs want the most.
This is a cornerstone of a good dog
trainer. This means if I get home late at
night and my neighbor's cat is in my
driveway, I am not going to say "Break"
to my passenger that happens to be a
Jack Russell Terrier. But that does not
mean I need another release command
that means come to me and not the cat.
I already have a command called "Here."
And this is a wonderful time and place
to strengthen that command. Get it?
If I am holding a ball and my dog is on
a stay and staring at me because he
wants that ball, I can say "Break" and
give him the ball. If I don't want him to
have the ball, I have another wonderful command called "Leave it" that I
also like to strengthen anytime I can. I
also hold my toys in ways that let the
dogs know whether the toy is available
or not when I release them. Another
article! My release command gets so
strong that the dog does not always
have to have what he wanted immediately, he will continue to work, always
knowing the reward he was dying to
get will eventually be given. He can
trust me on that one.
So, if my dog is in front of a jump and
I am not, I am off to the side and I say
"Break," how is my dog supposed to
know if he should come to me or go
over the jump? I think this is where
the whole issue was born, and it is a
very fair question. Back to what the
dog wants most. I have built so much
