How many times have you read this quote by Steve Maraboli?
"If you have a goal, write it down. If you do not write it down,
you don't have a goal-you have a wish."
I know that if you're reading this magazine, you have goals
for your dog and for yourself as a handler. You've also likely
attended numerous seminars, purchased DVDs and books,
listened to podcasts, and taken hours of classes in pursuit of
becoming a better handler and training your dogs.
But my questions are these:
* Are your goals written down and reviewed regularly?
* Do you have a system to capture feedback?
* How do you know you're on track to achieve your goals?
We are half of our agility team, yet most of the focus is on
our dogs. They have so much gear that it takes us (at least!)
three trips to the van to set up for a two-day trial, but we're
sort of just driving from trial to trial without a concrete,
overarching plan.
Luckily, this is an easy fix. I just need you to do one thing:
commit to using an annual calendar system that is only for
dog-related items.
Most of us have lifetime goals, titles, or awards we want to accomplish "at some point." But what about the time in between
now and then?
This first step is to get specific so that we intensify what we
desire. Not only are we going to write down the goals for each

dog, but we are also going to do so with timeframes to ensure
we are meeting milestones along the way.
Lifetime goals are those we want to accomplish in the dog's
lifetime (okay, obvious). But before you start putting all your
dreams in that one bucket, we are going to break down our
goals into three-year, one-year, and three-to-six-month timeframes. Record these somewhere in your calendar, maybe on
the note's pages provided. You will want to review these regularly and celebrate the progress.
Scheduling out our goals in this way forces us to put together training plans and evaluate exactly what we can accomplish and by when. This becomes more complex with
multiple dogs, each being on their own timeline with individualized plans.
My dedicated calendar system is just for the dogs. None of my
dentist appointments or haircuts make it in; instead, it's about
vet checks, in-season dates, chiro appointments, rehab progress, training sessions, and trials.
With goals in mind for the upcoming year, take a long-view
and plan out your year ahead. What are the big events and
milestones? Attending the Invitational? Bringing a dog back
from rehab? Competing at regionals? Capture these big
events in your monthly calendar view.
Next, take it down a level and look at your weekends and fill
in your planned trials and even classes or seminars. Continue
this process until you are getting more and more granular and
looking most closely at the next few months.
