Training Tip: Moving yourself slowly off to the side of the jump one
step at a time works well for many dogs. But some dogs will get
stuck at the same point. They just can't seem to make the leap to the
next step in the lateral move, and they start going around the jump
instead of taking it. Backing up a step does not always work; it often
does, but not always. For those dogs where it doesn't work, try adding an extra wing or another barrier with planted reinforcement to
lure/reward the dog. See Figure 3.

Planning Your Lead-Out
You need a reliable system to determine your lead-out position and
handling. I have a list of questions that I ask myself. If I answer them,
I end up in the right place, and I'm building consistency for the future. Long-term success depends on consistency.

Following are the questions I use to determine my job description for
each lead-out I do. Use the diagrams of different lead-outs for clarity.

See Figure 4 I want those beams to hit obstacle #2 in a way that sets
him up for obstacle #3 if possible or the refusal line of the jump if it is
a backside.
How far can i lead out and still cue every obstacle between my dog
and me?
Notice I did not ask how far can I lead out and still have my dog stay
put. If that is a factor, please read last month's article; it might reinspire you to tackle that problem.

Laser Beam Paws
Each of these dogs is set up to take two or three
obstacles or a backside (green refusal line). Notice
that that the red line does not perfectly go over the
bars. The dog can make these subtle adjustments,
but much more bend than that might constitute a turn
cue. How far back you set your dog from the first
jump is between you and your dog. There are
advantages and disadvanteges for you to learn.
