Of course, as soon as they say that I feel I can educate
them and try to get them to think about how their actions might actually put off judges for not just judging but
also from even trying to improve. It's great the judges take
the opportunity to come on amazing judges' education
programs such as GJP, and we should be encouraging our
judges to be the best they can be. But we all got to start
somewhere, and we are all going to make mistakes. I wish
more handlers would also come along and listen to our social media section, and read the examples, because it would
probably make them think twice about future posts.
Just like how we learn running a dog, judges will often learn
by making errors too. What we should be doing as an agility community is encouraging judges to take on as much
education as possible and offering constructive feedback
in a positive way that encourages the judges to want to
improve. Too often the feedback is given in such a negative
way that it just discourages judges from even trying!
From an event organizer's point of you Greg will often tell
me stories of having to deal with issues on social media
resolving rule changes, Incidents at shows and opinions on
courses, surfaces and many other things. Of course social
media provides a platform to easily communicate to many
people, I mean how many times have we all checked our
Facebook today to see who's had the best breakfast, done
a 5k run or taken a picture of their morning Starbucks
with the hashtag #Coffeeneeded? I am sure we can all relate. But we probably won't have checked the Kennel Club
website for any possible updates or press releases. Most of
our news is gathered through links shared to social media!
I've seen examples of some extremely aggressive tones
and foul language being directed towards event organizers
and judges on Facebook. During the recent developments
with cancellations of shows and various other things there
has been some extremely heated discussion in Facebook
groups sometimes boiling over into offensive slanging
matches. Although I'm not really surprised anymore it still
makes me chuckle how aggressive people can get over
some of the most trivial things.
During our GJP seminars we look at many social media examples and we try to educate our judges in most cases of
being able to see it for what it actually is. More often than
not is the competitor having failed at the competition and
looking for somebody to blame. "The surface was slippy"
"the course was dangerous" "The judge was too close and
scared my dog" "The person in front of me took too long"
I could go on...
