My Puppy is Fearful

Question: I am so worried
about my 5-month-old puppy.
She is afraid of so many
things. It seems like she's
afraid of life. I don't think I
will ever be able to do agility with her. I take her to
class, and when she hears a
noise, she won't play or eat.
I spend the entire class walking around the thing that she
is afraid of, and I can't get
her over it. Can you help? -

Thank you for providing me with
the age of your puppy and a
typical scenario that elicits a fear
response. That is very helpful!
I understand what you are going through, and it is difficult not

to worry. However, you can get
through this dilemma, but you will
need to be extremely patient. I am
not sure if your puppy has always
been fearful or if this is a recent
change, but I am assuming the
fear issues have been from the
beginning, and that is why you
are so concerned. However, at
five months of age, she is most
likely entering her final fear period,
which could be making normal
puppy concerns seem abnormal
and overwhelming.
Fear responses can be caused by
many things; some are genetic,
some are from lack of exposure
or overexposure in the neonatal
period through the transitional period, and other fear responses are
simply due to normal fear periods
in a puppy's development. All but
genetic fears can be reduced if
not eliminated through proper
conditioning.
Always try to remember that
extreme fear can put dogs and
people in irrational states of being. For conditioning to be effective, the dog should never be put
over threshold when addressing
the fear. You can gauge a puppy's
level of anxiety by his willingness
to eat and play. This is where your
patience comes in. You can not
rush this process, or you could potentially exasperate the problem.
Since you mentioned noises, that
is what we will focus on. I always
start exposure to fearful stimuli in
a place of comfort. That is typically
your own home. You will want to
create scenarios that expose your
puppy to a multitude of noises
while you are feeding or playing
with your puppy. Begin feeding or
playing at a comfortable distance
away from the noise. That may be
two rooms away. Different noises
will elicit various fear thresholds,
so you will need to gauge them individually. The most important step
is never to move closer until your
puppy is in a completely relaxed
state. This may take a day, or possibly months, but do not hurry this
