In my classes and seminars, I have identified a protocol for dealing with problems as they crop up. The steps are ● Define the behavior ● Train the behavior ● Find the envelope (that place where the dog is able to correctly perform the behavior) Get Started With Our 4-Jump Kit includes all necessary pipe, fittings and jump cups to build 4 jumps that adjust from 3" to 35" in height ● Work the envelope (challenge the dog in small increments to perform the behavior in more difficult environments/situations) In my seminars and first lessons with new students, I can tell you from experience we almost never get past the first two steps, and we almost always have to spend a lot of time on the first step: define the behavior. I think the dog training community has made great strides in realizing how closely you have to break down each behavior into its components and train each one. Yet I think many people still do not realize (strict behaviorists, cover your eyes) you do have to train the emotional component of agility behaviors. The way the dog feels about doing a behavior is an essential component of that behavior, just as important as body position or speed. Furthermore, a behavior trained and maintained in such a way as to produce emotional stress in a dog is not the same as a behavior freely offered by a dog in a joyful manner. The end result may look the same to us, but they are completely different behaviors to the dog. In the past, we have, in my opinion, gotten into a lot of trouble by assigning emotional states to behavior. “He’s blowing me off; he’s dominant; he knows how to do this!” These assumptions have resulted in unfortunate consequences for dogs, such as unfair corrections or retirement from agility. I agree that speculation on the emotional motivation of a dog’s failure to perform is not constructive. However, I think we may have thrown the baby out with the bathwater, and reasonable assumptions about a dog’s emotional state can be made by observation of relatively objective criteria.
