The Start

The #1-#4 sequence is interesting.
There are subtle differences in handling that can make big differences on
the ground. If you thought of doing a
front cross on the landing side of jump
#3, would you lead out to the front of
jump #2, recall the dog, wait until he
goes past you, and then run across for
the front cross as shown in Figure 2?
This would be a common way of doing
this type of start, but the dog can only
go at the speed at which you can create
the handling path. So, if you have to wait
for the dog to go past you at jump #2
before you move, the subsequent front
cross is going to hold up the dog.
Now take a look at Figure 3. If you
start approximately halfway between
jumps #1 and #2, but lateral to them,
and drive forward to support the direction of jump #2, it allows you to get into
position for the front cross (between
jumps #3 and #4) much earlier.
If you have a dog that reacts really
strongly to your acceleration and, therefore, is likely to go wide between jumps

Because handler has to wait for dog to pass
her before she starts moving toward front cross
position, this front cross will hold up the dog.
Starting in this position allows the handler to get
to her front cross position between jumps #3 and
#4 much earlier than in the previous example.
#2 and #3 because of your forward movement, then you need only create a small
amount of forward movement-enough to cue the jump but not launch your dog into
outer space! The fact that you are lateral and moving away for the front cross should
bring most dogs back into jump #3 without too much of a problem. Alternatively, if
you have a smaller striding dog that really needs forward momentum to get to the
back of jumps, then just start a bit closer to jump #1. This allows you to create lots of
forward movement yet still achieves the front cross position with dogs that can be a
bit sticky to the handler.
Of course, a front cross can stall you somewhat; and since the next part of the course
needs you to drive away to get to jumps #7 and #8, a blind cross between jumps
