AKC Premier Explained

In October 2015 the American Kennel Club introduced the Premier Standard and
Premier Jumpers with Weaves classes. The Premier classes are optional, so some areas of the country are seeing them every weekend and other areas rarely see them.
Normally I do not focus on one venue, but although the class has been running
over six months, it still seems like there is frequent exhibitor confusion regarding
the actual Premier challenges/sequences, as well as some of the special Premier
course design nuances.
When Premier first came out, the description was that the courses would challenge
the dog and handlers in ways "that are not seen on traditional AKC courses." The
main goal in the Premier classes is to place an emphasis on handling. A Premier
course should require a different skill set than would normally be used on a Masters
course, but should not be overburdened with challenges that no one can do. Premier
sequences should be placed so that handlers can get into position to handle them.

Eligibility and Titles
Dog with an AX title are eligible to enter Premier Standard. Dogs with the AX or
AXP may enter Premier Standard Preferred. A dog must have the AXJ title to enter
Premier Jumpers. A dog with an AXJ or AJP title may enter the Preferred division of
Premier Jumpers.
According to the updated AKC Regulations, the following titles are awarded at the
Premier levels: Premier Agility Dog (PAD), Premier Agility Dog Preferred (PADP), Premier Jumpers Dog (PJD), and Premier Jumpers Dog Preferred (PJDP).
"A dog must earn 25 qualifying scores with five qualifying scores earned for placing in the top 25% of the dogs that competed in their jump height. Dogs that are
absent or withdrawn will not count toward the number of dogs competing in the
jump height. The 25% calculation will be rounded to determine the number of 25%
placements in each jump height. In the case of a tie both dogs will receive the top
25% placement. If a class has two or three dogs competing, the 1st place dog will
be awarded a top 25% placement qualifying score If only one dog competes in the
jump height, there will be no top 25% placement earned in that jump height."

Lifetime Achievement titles will be
awarded for each additional 25 qualifying scores earned in the Premier class.

Maximum Course Times
The Premier class is a timed class and
the dog must run under maximum
course time and achieve a clean run to
be able to get a qualifying score. The
maximum course times are shown in
the tables below.
