Everything you always wanted to know about agility but were to ask afraid By Brenna Fender ? The USDAA rule book says that in Starters Gamblers the judge may add up to 3 seconds to the Championship gamble time for the Performance I dogs. What criteria are used to decide how many seconds to add? According to USDAA rules, the addition of up to 3 additional seconds for the gamble time applies to all levels in the Performance Program, not just Starters.A USDAA representative states, “To determine the seconds allowed for the gamble, the judge assesses the dog’s path for length of the gamble as well as the gamble type and which obstacles are to be performed. The time allotted for completion of the gamble should be the time that would be reasonably expected for the dog to perform the obstacle sequence in an appropriate level agility class. Based on those criteria the gamble time is determined for the jump heights in the Championship program and then additional seconds given to the Performance jump heights.” In most cases, one second is added to the corresponding Performance jump height in the Gamblers class. The USDAA representative adds, “This is appropriate in most cases, since three seconds are added to Performance Standard and Jumpers classes where dogs are performing 14-20 obstacles, and gamble sequences typically range from 3-5 obstacles. Occasionally, judges add 2 seconds to the Performance gamble time when there are multiple challenges.” Although the rules allow the addition of up to 3 seconds, the Performance gamble time must not exceed 22 seconds. How do I access lists of judges on the USDAA, AKC, and NADAC websites? To find a list of USDAA judges, go to www.usdaa.com and click on “Group Services” on the left side of the screen in the blue column. A drop-down menu will give you several options, including “Approved Judges List.” Click the judges list and the main screen will give you choices of people approved to judge up to each level (Starters, Advanced, and Masters), including any important notes (such as a requirement for supervision or if the judge is a Certified Measuring Judge). The number of events assigned to a judge and the location of those events is also provided to help groups plan trials. The judges’ phone numbers and physical and email addresses are included. To locate an AKC judge, go to www.akc.org, click events, then agility on the left side. Next go down the left-side gray box and put your cursor on “Judges.” A small box will come up to the right with several options. Click on “Judges Search.” The main screen shows a search engine to select judges who meet the criteria you are looking for. You can search by state, status, and other combinations of factors. Listings display all relevant information, including complete contact information, past and future judging assignments, and judging status. Go to www. nadac.com and see the link on the left side that says “Judge Info.” Click it and you will go to the Judge Information main page. Scroll down and click on “Judges List—Find a NADAC Judge.” You will find a list of all NADAC judges, along with both their physical and email addresses. The direct link to the list is http://nadac.com/afrm/judges_list.asp. How are the UKC Agility All-Star rankings calculated? Section XIV, Letter F of the United Kennel Club rule book states: “All-Star points are automatically awarded at all UKC Licensed agility events to each dog with a qualifying score of 196 or higher….” A score of 196 earns 1 point, 197 earns 2, 198 earns 4, 199 earns 6, and 200 earns 10 points. Fractional points are rounded down to the nearest whole number. Points are calculated from January 1 to December 31 of each year. The UKC tallies Agility I, Agility II, and Agility III All-Star points separately and publishes the names of the top 50 All Stars from each class (Agility I, II, and II) on the UKC web page each month. The top 50 ranked dogs in each class may be invited to compete in an Agility All-Star Invitational competition.
