The course design was a culmination of several student requests. I also wanted to provide handling challenges for students who compete in all venues so I designed an opportunity for distance work in the sequences. 2 19 9 Masters and Advanced We used the course in Figure 1 in the Masters and Advanced classes. Several students had requested the chute as a start so I began the course with the USDAA-length chute. Students had the most success leading out to the #2 double or beyond to jump #3 and then executing a front cross from #3 to the #4 tunnel. From the tunnel, handlers kept the dog on the left into the weave poles and then either did a front cross at the end of the weaves or executed a false turn to the #7 tunnel. Most handlers were challenged with the dogwalk/tunnel discrimination at #8. Students were successful by moving forward toward the dogwalk while the dog was in the #7 tunnel and then calling the dog from a stationary position close to the dogwalk. Several handlers who waited for the dog to come out of the tunnel and moved forward lost their dog into the off-course weaves. Once the dog was on the dogwalk, students needed to decide which direction to turn the dog over jump #9. Most handlers were on the left side of the dogwalk and opted to turn the dog to his left over jump #9, wrapping the dog back to the #10 triple. A few students turned the dog to his right over #9, incurring either a wide turn or an off-course dogwalk. All handlers kept the dog on the right for the #10 triple through the #14 table. Most students found it necessary to call their dogs to heel or execute a false turn from the tunnel to jump #13 to avoid the off-course weave poles. From the table to the end of the course, most students kept the dog on the right. A few students did a front cross from the #15 tunnel to jump #16 and then did a rear cross on the ﬂat between jump #17 and the A-frame. The sequences in Figure 2 accompanied the course in Figure 1 for the Masters and Advanced students. For the white sequence, students began with the dog on the left without much of a leadout. Most students did a front cross on the landing side of jump #4 and pulled the dog, using lateral motion, to the #5 tunnel. Other students kept the dog on the left and did a rear cross at the tunnel. Most students kept the dog on the left from the tunnel to the #8 jump and executed a front cross that turned the dog left to jump #9. A few handlers did a front cross from jump #7 to jump #8, turning the dog back to the right to jump #9 by either wrapping the jump and keeping the dog on the left or by doing 84 1 1 Advanced/Masters Course 4 3 4 9 T 5 8 3 5 6 2 7 2 6 1 8 1 2 7 9 Advanced/Masters Sequences another front cross and ﬁnishing with the dog on the right. The black sequence gave handlers an opportunity to practice distance handling by layering the dogwalk and sending the dog out to jump #6. All students began the sequence by leading out to or beyond the #2 triple with the dog on the right. Handlers either pulled, did a false turn, and/or did a front cross from the teeter to the #4 tunnel. Quite a few students opted to try layering the dogwalk from the #5 tunnel to jump #6. Students choosing this option had to make sure that they kept moving forward while the dog was jumping #6 so that the dog got a good approach to the dogwalk. Another way of handling this sequence was to do a front cross as the dog exited the #4 tunnel, handling the #5 tunnel with the dog on the left.
