Simply talking about training ideas and plans is great, but writing them down is the best way to commit to getting them done. A written plan can keep the training on track, while allowing students to assess their progress throughout the training. Also, the goals, ideas, and details are featured prominently rather than glossed over or forgotten. Each behavior should have its own training plan. Simpler behaviors require short plans (maybe even as short as a few sentences) while more complex behaviors might need several pages. It is important to give each behavior its own place in the plan, so the plan is easy to read and the ideas don’t run together and become a confusing jumble. We all have different ways to write down plans. Some people are comfortable with lists, tables and charts, while others prefer to use text and paragraphs. Either way is fine, but it is important to keep the training plan in

an uncluttered, easily accessible place such as a binder, notebook, or journal. Random sheets of paper, Post-It notes, or email printouts are often messy and easily lost.

My Goals: These are performance goals and long-term goals the student has already developed. Putting these goals at the top of the training plan helps students stay focused as they work through the other layers of the plan. What I Want: This section must include an in-depth description of the specific behavior students want to train. This description should include the desired end result, particularly the criteria to be maintained when the dog starts competing.

As students prepare their training plan, be available to provide feedback and ideas. A fun way to do this is to set aside 5 or 10 minutes at the end of each class for the group to go over their training plans. This allows everyone in class to learn from others’ experience and even
