Sy Liebergot From Army test station to EECOM console By David Carey y Liebergot was a NASA controller in Houston for more than two decades, much of it as EECOM—an acronym for the electrical, environmental and communications systems the position oversees. From the EECOM console, Liebergot participated in NASA’s conquest of the moon with Apollo and beyond, into the Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), space shuttle and space station (now the International Space Station, or ISS) programs. Chief responsibilities centered on management of life support and energy systems aboard the command and service module (CSM). Liebergot’s engineering interests grew with an Army deployment to the Yuma (Ariz.) Test Station, where he was involved in the launch of rawinsonde high-altitude weather balloons. He was intrigued by the radio telemetry, data recording and science involved in launching things sky-high.
