‘Steely-eyed missile man’ By David Carey uring my conversation with Jerry Bostick, John Aaron’s name came up. “Oh, John lives just around the corner,” Bostick noted before providing an introduction to his neighbor and friend. Aaron’s distinguished career with the NASA engineering corps dates back to the two-man Gemini program. He played a central role in the successful Apollo 12 moon landing and helped save the crew of the crippled Apollo 13. As a young man living on a ranch in Oklahoma with seven sisters, Aaron had many responsibilities. The skills he honed repairing farm equipment paid off later in his EECOM work. Aaron earned a physics degree from a small Oklahoma engineering college and joined NASA in 1965 after a fellow student mentioned that the agency was recruiting to “staff this new thing called the space program.” When his college advisor warned him that his background might be lacking for a target of aeronautics, Aaron’s response was, “Well, you can’t stop me from trying.” Previous thoughts of teaching to support a career raising Herefords went out the window when perseverance and curiosity about “how all Plans to raise Herefords were ditched when Aaron joined ‘this new thing called the space program’
