A p o ll o pe r s pec t i v e s men to the moon.” The series debuted on the Discovery Science Channel this month. Sington has been making documentaries for the BBC and PBS since 1987. He formed his own production company, DOX Productions, in 1999. The filmmaker agrees that “In the Shadow of the Moon” is probably his best work. He managed to spend two full days each with eight of the Apollo astronauts who walked on the moon; two members of the Apollo 11 crew; and Jim Lovell, a veteran of two lunar flights and the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13. Sington describes his “motivation for doing the film” thus: “Here was a group of human beings who had a completely unique experience of going to another [world], the only people to have left Earth orbit, the only people to see the whole orb 24 EE Times | Apollo | July 20, 2009 R R Video Interview David Sington of the Earth.” The final product is a briskly paced, powerful documentary in which the moonwalkers reveal how the experience forever changed them and their view of the Earth—indeed, of the universe and the place of human beings in it. The filmmaker’s decision to invest precious funds in Philip Sheppard’s celestial score, with its frontier allusions, underscores the documentary’s sense of wonder. While Neil Armstrong declined to be interviewed for the film, Sington said he had exchanged e-mails with the first man on the moon. And Armstrong isn’t absent from the film: Archival footage depicts an earnest, unflappable test pilot who lands at the Sea of Tranquility with only vapors left in his LM gas tank. “You see [the other astronauts] as they were 40 years ago in archival footage, then you see them today. [Armstrong] alone doesn’t age in the film. There’s something quite nice about that,” Sington said. p ‘[These were] the only people to see the whole orb of Earth’
