Genesis rock teardown what Scott and Irwin had come to Hadley Rille to find. The astronauts documented their find, taking the minimum five photos before scooping up the rock and placing it in sample container No. 196 at 145 hours and 42 minutes into their mission. A NASA summary of the Genesis Rock further explains the significance of the Apollo 15 find: “Early in the moon’s history, there was a stage known as the magma ocean in which the moon’s outer layers were molten. As the magma ocean cooled and solidified, the plagioclase-rich anorthosite floated on the surface like icebergs in the Earth’s oceans. The existence of the magma ocean phase was first recognized from small fragments in the Apollo 11 samples, but Apollo 15’s Genesis Rock is important because it is much larger than any previous sample of lunar anorthosite. Apollo 31 EE Times | Apollo | July 20, 2009 16 later collected an anorthosite sample that is both larger and older than Genesis Rock. Studies of Genesis Rock indicate an age of about 4 billion years. However, it is believed that this represents a time when the rock experienced a metamorphic alteration and that the rock is actually older than 4 billion years.” Apollo 15 was the first of the Apollo “J missions” that included the lunar rover, the moon buggy that greatly increased the range of the lunar explorers. Scott and Irwin used the rover to explore the edges of Hadley Rille, which is believed to have been created by volcanic action, and large sections of the Hadley Delta. Apollo 15 was the first exploration of the mountains of the moon. Two more Apollo crews would use the lunar rover to explore the lunar highlands.p
