But the Soviet program can lay claim to any number of firsts, including the first unmanned lunar and Mars landings, the first spacewalk; the first space station; and the first man, woman and dog in space. Sputnik 1’s successful launch was a wakeup call for Russia’s Cold War archrival. U.S. Congresswoman Clare Boothe Luce is reported to have referred to the Soviet satellite’s beeps as “an intercontinental outer-space raspberry to 40 EE Times | Apollo | July 20, 2009 a decade of American pretensions that the American way of life was a gilt-edged guarantee of our national superiority.” The United States responded by creating NASA and the Advanced Research Projects Agency (now the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa) in 1958. But the Soviet program scored an even bigger coup on April 12, 1961, when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, riding in the Vostok 1 capsule, became the first human to launch into space and orbit the Earth. “The Earth is blue.
