Watch the grunion run. Experience an event
that is uniquely Californian by watching
hundreds of silvery fish come ashore to lay their eggs.
Kids 16 and younger can collect grunion without a
fishing license. Runs are best observed three to four
nights after full and new moons at Doheny State
Beach, Salt Creek Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach.

Go for a hike. There are several wilderness
parks in the O.C. Parks system with great
hikes for families. Spend the summer hiking to the
red rock of Whiting Ranch or through the canyons
of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Spot abundant

campsites are available at O'Neill Regional
Park in Trabuco Canyon, Caspers Wilderness Park,

Clemente State Beach.

Find life in one of Orange County's tide
pools. When the tide rolls out, start searching
for all sorts of interesting creatures, such as hermit
crabs, sea stars and even octopuses. Little Corona del
Mar Beach and Main Beach in Laguna often have
docents at the pools with handy identification charts.

Enjoy a beachfront movie. Summer movies
at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort are
essentially Orange County's version of a drive-in.
Bring a blanket, a chair and someone to cuddle

pollution, kids in Orange County don't grow
up seeing many stars. Download the free Star Chart
app to your smartphone, get away from the city
lights, (Caspers Wilderness Park is a good local spot)

Go bird watching at the Bolsa Chica
Ecological Reserve. More than 200 species
have been spotted at these tidal wetlands.

Attend a special event at Angel Stadium. Let
the kids run the bases on Family Sundays,
watch the fireworks after Saturday night games or
score Angels-themed goodies - everything from
bobbleheads to cowboy hats - at various events

Take a beachfront bike ride. It's a six-mile
round-trip ride between Huntington State
Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach, and the terrain
is as flat and fun. Bring bikes from home or rent a
surrey at one of the bike stands along the sand.

restrictions apply as to where you can go, but
this is an eye-opener for the curious kiddo in your

Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa has goats
