How to Read the Facility Listing Guide
Types of facilities:
(RCF) Residential Care Facility: A licensed non-medical facility that provides assistance with activities of
daily living for persons who are not able to live independently. RCF's range from a private home to a large facility
with up to 300 beds. Residential care facilities are also known as Assisted Living and Board and Care.
(SNF) Skilled Nursing Facility: A licensed facility that provides medical, nursing and rehabilitative care. Residents generally need help in performing one or more activities of daily living. Nursing homes are also known as
nursing centers, convalescent hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation centers. Most Nursing facilities in O.C. are certified for both Medicare/Medicaid.
Distinguish between an Assisted Living Facility or Board and Care, designated as an RCF and a Skilled Nursing Facility or SNF, depending on the level of care needed for your loved one.
n Decide which city you would like the facility to be located in.
n Look for the size of the facility that best meets your needs, ie: a six bed Board and Care versus a 150 Assisted
Living facility.
n Call the facility, especially the small ones, to determine if they are still in business and if they have any
vacancies.
n Select multiple facilities and visit the ones you are most interested in several times, at different times of the
day, to get a proper feeling of the care and atmosphere of the facility.
n If you have any questions regarding the complaint and/or compliance history of the facility, call the appropriate licensing agency or see Page 74 for website information.
n If it is a RCFE the licensing agency is the California Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing and they can be reached at 714-703-2840.
n If it is a SNF the licensing agency is the California Department of Public Health and they can be reached at
714-567-2906.
