PHOTOGRAPHY: PAUL GRUNDY (ALL ON THIS SPREAD) The atria (left) enable sightlines to all levels. At the junction of the two atria an open stair (below) twists upward through the informal social spaces of each floor. Labs (opposite, bottom two) feature flexible casework systems with pops of color, while a cafe (opposite, top) has all-white surfaces to provide a calming respite. Key Design Highlights Located in central London, the building is prominently sited near St Pancras railway station and the British Library. Intersecting atria create sightlines between all floors and allow natural light to permeate. At the base of the atrium, the auditorium is enclosed by a rounded white structure. Open-plan labs, which feature adaptable casework systems, were designed to encourage connection and interaction among the 1,500 staff members. An open stair at the junction of the two atria further encourages informal social encounters. Splashes of color punctuate collaboration areas and also contrast the neutral lab research environments. 126 contractdesign.com JUNE 2017http://www.contractdesign.com
