INTERIORS AWARDS PHOTOGRAPHY: MATTHEW MILLMAN (HOUSE OF EARTH AND SKY); ADAM ROUSE (TREEHOUSE); CHRIS GRAMLY (BOTTOM LEFT); BRUCE DAMONTE (BOTTOM RIGHT) Perched on a northern California plateau, the House of Earth and Sky fulfills the western dream of indooroutdoor living. Rammed earth and glass connect with wood floors, ceilings, and built-ins in the natural-light-filled abode (near and far right). The suburban "Tree House" is surrounded by live oaks and redwoods, which envelop the structure in an idyllic sanctuary of leaves and shadows (below left and right). In wine country, the cedar boxes that compose this Sonoma retreat make the most of the epic views with floor-to-ceiling facades that retract into the adjacent walls when the weather permits (bottom, left and right). Visitors are encouraged to seek out their own bliss at Stanford University's Windhover Contemplative Center (opposite page). Quiet reflection is encouraged during the day-when the building is open and art can be examined up close-and at night, when it's closed but illuminated from the inside and guests can still enjoy the displays. Surrounded by fountains and a reflecting pool, the calming oasis was designed as a break from the bustle of everyday life. 44 contractdesign.com JANUARY 2020http://www.contractdesign.com
