While 2023 EV sales broke the 1 million milestone
in November, according to the National
Automobile Dealers Association, electric vehicles
are now stacking up on dealership lots as automaker
supply is outstripping consumer demand.
Electric adoption is growing, just not as
fast as automakers such as General Motors and
Ford Motor Co. expected, causing them to cut
back production plans.
" The stagnation in EV market share comes as a
bit of a surprise but perhaps is more expected
when considering the market forces playing a
role in the stall, " said Jessica Caldwell, director of
insights at Edmunds.
" Americans are contending with higher living
costs and soaring interest rates, prompting a shift
in preference towards lower-cost new vehicles.
That deviation hasn't boded well for the pricier
EVs, " Caldwell told Automotive News.
To be sure, EV sales are still growing strong for
the year. New-vehicle registrations are higher by
58 percent through October to 955,509, Experian
data shows. But the relatively modest segment
growth from 5.6 percent of the market for the first
10 months of 2022 to 7.4 percent for the same period
this year is seen by industry analysts as a red
flag.
" EV sales have continued to grow from 1 percent
of total industry volume in 2019 to nearly 8
percent this year, " Cox Automotive said in late
November. " But the looming question on everyone's
mind is whether the market has reached
peak demand for the current EV offerings. "
'Reluctant consumers'
Cox said EV inventory reached 100 days' supply
last month compared with 67 days for the industry
as a whole.
" Reluctant
consumers

concerned
about charging infrastructure, range and future
resale values, " Cox said. " Electric vehicle adoption
is happening much slower than expected,
and the profit margins are abysmal. "
The mixed EV picture also comes as sales of
gasoline vehicles and hybrids remain strong.
That bolsters the argument of automakers such
as Toyota and Honda that see better opportunities
for EVs later in the decade.
New registrations for all vehicles, regardless of
fuel type, reached 12.9 million through October
for a 13 percent gain over the same period last
year, Experian said.

Endrud said there's a recognition among automakers
and suppliers that electrification in
North America is unlikely to ramp up at the pace

181,699 registrations for 13 percent growth over
last year.

Chevrolet's share of the EV segment was 5.9 percent
through October, up from 4.4 percent in the
year-earlier period.
Ford was a close third, with its new EV registrations
rising 26 percent to 55,155. That was good
for a 5.8 percent share of the EV segment, down
from 7.2 percent last year. Ford's top EVs were the
Mustang Mach-E, with 32,065 new registrations,
and the F-150 Lightning, with 17,850.
Hyundai was fourth in the brand rankings, with
45,621 new registrations, about double compared
with last year. Through October, Hyundai's
share of the electric segment was 4.8 percent, vs.
3.8 percent last year. Its top model was the Ioniq 5
crossover, with 27,751, followed by the Ioniq 6 sedan,
with 9,094.
Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai,
Kia and Genesis brands, is the No. 2 overall
automaker in new EV registrations, with 76,441.
Its combined 8 percent market share beats GM's
total share of 6.7 percent including the Cadillac
and GMC brands.
Tripled, quadrupled
Rivian Automotive is fifth on the list of top EV
brands, with 35,751 new registrations through
October, which is about triple its volume last
year. The EV maker's top model was the R1S
crossover, with 19,387 new registrations, vs. 676
last year. The R1T pickup had 9,347, which was
about 10 percent lower than last year. Rivian's
share of the segment was 3.7 percent.
BMW was sixth, with 34,806 new registrations,
more than quadruple its EV sales last year. Its top
electric models were the i4 sedan, with 19,101,
and the iX crossover, with 12,960.
Mercedes-Benz was close behind in seventh
place, with 31,843 new registrations, about quadruple
last year. Its biggest sellers were the EQS
and EQE. Both models come in sedan and utility
vehicle versions.
Volkswagen was eighth, with 30,939 new registrations
of its ID4 crossover for a 128 percent increase
and a 3.2 percent segment share. Kia was
ninth, with 26,032, which was nearly flat vs. last
year for a 2.7 percent share. Audi was the No. 10
EV brand, with 20,091 new registrations through
October.
The Experian EV data covers 28 brands, including
newcomers such as Fisker, with 820 new registrations.
That put it at No. 23 in the ranking. VinFast
was No. 24, with 324 new registrations
through October. Rolls-Royce was No. 27, with 11
registrations of its new Spectre EV, while van
maker BrightDrop was last, with five registrations.
