With new-vehicle inventories reduced, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.’s finance arm has launched programs to help Toyota and Lexus dealers buy more off-lease used vehicles. Changes to Dealer Direct, Toyota’s online remarketing channel, will make it easier for Toyota and Lexus dealers to buy the vehicles before they are offered to other dealers, said Mike Reid, Toyota Financial Services remarketing manager. Through July, floorplan loans for vehicles sold on Dealer Direct will be based on either purchase price or guidebook value, whichever is greater. Normally the loans are based just on guidebook value. Through June, Toyota Financial will buy back a vehicle sold on the channel if a dealer does not sell it in 60 days, for the purchase price minus transportation and reconditioning expenses. Reid says the programs will help dealers get through a period in which new vehicles are in short supply because of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and in which used-vehicle prices are volatile. The programs will help dealers who want to augment new-vehicle inventories with certified used vehicles, says Scott Heyer, fleet sales corporate manager for Toyota Motor Sales. “Given the new-vehicle production challenge” of the summer, he said, “there is more propensity for used cars to act as an alternative to new vehicles our dealers might not have.” On April 25, Toyota Financial retooled Dealer Direct to allow dealers to buy off-lease vehicles on the site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before then the finance company operated two auctions every day, Monday through Friday, for Toyota dealers and Lexus dealers. The company still conducts those daily auctions but has added buynow prices to sell vehicles when auctions aren’t being held. Vehicles that don’t sell at the second daily auction are offered exclusively to the Toyota or Lexus dealers that took them back from the lease customer. Unsold vehicles are sent to a physical auction and offered in two consecutive weekend online auctions held exclusively for Toyota and Lexus dealers. Vehicles left over from those events are up for grabs in sales open to all dealers, Reid says. He adds: “We’re fully vested in keeping vehicles in the Toyota and Lexus family.” c
