Mercedes no longer reports retail
sales numbers, so its results aren't
comparable with those of its peers.
The company said it made the change
to better align vehicle sales figures
with financial filings, which are based
on wholesales to dealers.
In the third quarter, Mercedes wholesaled
85,037 vehicles, a 33 percent jump
from a year ago, aided by improved
availability of the GLC crossover.
Sluggish demand
Including Mercedes' wholesale figures,
the Automotive News Research &
Data Center tallied 502,211 U.S. sales
by luxury brands in the third quarter,
up 2.4 percent.
Edmunds data shows the time it took
retailers to sell luxury vehicles in September
rose 53 percent from a year
earlier to 55 days.
That's having repercussions on the
transition from 2024 model-year vehicles
to 2025.

Last month, 2025 model-year inventory
accounted for 37 percent of luxury
sector sales. A year ago, 47 percent of
sales stemmed from the new model
year.
Ivan Drury, Edmunds' director of insights,
said these trends " guarantee
that heavy incentives and discounts
will be required to rid dealer lots of
stale inventory. "
Best of the rest
Audi sales tumbled 22 percent to
46,752 vehicles, its largest quarterly
sales decline this year. Just two models,
the E-tron GT electric sedan and Q3
compact crossover, saw sales increases
in the third quarter.
Cadillac rounded out the top legacy
auto volume leaders with third-quarter
sales of 37,214 vehicles, up 4.4 percent.
Acura's
third-quarter deliveries
dipped 10 percent to 33,109, while
Volvo fell 12 percent to 28,535.
Genesis logged a third-quarter record
20,117 deliveries, up 3.6 percent
from the same period last year. The Korean
brand's growth was fueled by its
crossover lineup, including the freshened
midsize GV80 and its coupe
counterpart, which started deliveries
in June.
Asian rival Infiniti's sales dropped 12
percent to 14,540.
