SUBCOMPACT

Fiat maintained its minicar dominance with the Panda
on top and the 500 at No. 2. The new VW Up was the
only model in the top 5 that increased sales, which
helped it overtake the Renault Twingo to finish in
3rd place. The Toyota Aygo ranked fifth.

The Ford Fiesta, down 13% to 303,822, became
Europe’s best-selling subcompact model, ahead
of the VW Polo, which slipped 20% to 285,389. The
Toyota Yaris, up 25% to 171,523, was the only model in the top 5 that increased year-on-year sales.

COMPACT

The VW Passat strengthened its leadership in the
mid-sized segment, beating its closest rival by
a 2-to-1 margin. VW sold 194,455 Passats while
Opel/Vauxhall sold 95,095 units of the Insignia.
With flat 2012 sales, the Peugeot 508 rose to No.
3 ahead of the Ford Mondeo, which fell 17%.

MID-SIZED

The VW Golf was the best-selling compact in Europe and the best-selling model overall. VW sold
a combined 403,238 units of the sixth-generation Golf, which debuted in 2008, as well as of the
seventh-generation, which went on sale in November.
The Nissan Qashqai was the only top five model with stable sales.

MEDIUM MINIVAN
The Renault Scenic/Grand Scenic kept its lead
in the medium minivan segment despite a 19%
sales decline to 129,264. All the top five models suffered double-digit declines with the
Citroen C4 Picasso and Peugeot 5008 each
down by more than 20%.

The new generation of the VW Golf Cabriolet dominated the convertible and roadster segment. With
a volume of 25,095 last year, VW sold twice as
many convertible Golfs as each of the car’s closest competitors, the Peugeot 207cc and the
Smart ForTwo Cabrio.

SMALL MINIVAN
Despite a 38% decline to 78,400, the Opel/Vauxhall Meriva maintained a comfortable lead in
the small minivan segment. All the top five
models suffered sales declines and the small
minivan segment lost 22% of its volume, or
almost 100,000 buyers, shrinking to 352,601
units overall.

CONVERTIBLE & ROADSTER

The Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC jumped to No. 1 in the
coupe segment thanks to a threefold increase in sales.
Its closest rivals, the Renault Megane, VW
Scirocco and Peugeot RCZ, suffered
declines between 34% and 41%, pushing the coupe segment down by 6% to
below 100,000 annual sales.
