he executives who are this year's Eurostars have stood out from their rivals
by exceeding expectations. Volkswagen
Group CEO Herbert Diess changed the
dialog on Europe's largest automaker by
aggressively pushing into the electric era.
Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller did what
seemed impossible: making the German
volume brand profitable after decades
of losses. Kia Europe boss Emilio Herrera has the Korean automaker on pace
to keep growing in a declining European
market because of strong demand for

models such as the Stonic and Sportage
crossovers. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten
Müller-Ötvös led the launch of the ultraluxury brand's first SUV, the Cullinan,
which has the company on track to set
a new all-time sales high in 2019. The
other 15 Eurostars, who were chosen by
the editors of Automotive News Europe,
have achieved equally impressive results.
Automotive News Europe and PwC will
honor the winners at an awards dinner
in Frankfurt on September 9.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Diess was appointed a senior executive in
charge of procurement at BMW in 2007
before heading up development five years
later. He was in the running to take over
at BMW Group as CEO, then accepted an
offer to run the Volkswagen brand in July
2015. In April last year, he was appointed
VW Group CEO.

REASON FOR WINNING
Only a year into his term as VW Group
CEO, Diess has unveiled one of the most
aggressive strategies for managing the
technological transformation in the industry. Not only has Volkswagen committed itself to a cumulative 20 million
EV sales by 2028, it has arguably the
most ambitious plan for mobility services, forming partnerships with major tech
companies such as Microsoft to create
and manage its own digital ecosystem
that aims to attract 5 million users each
year for the VW brand alone.
