at Geneva auto show
Plug-in hybrids set to pass EVs in sales this year, but bump may be temporary

ew plug-in hybrid cars will take center
stage at the Geneva auto show this
month, overshadowing even electric vehicles as automakers embrace a technology that offers perhaps the best immediate
pathway to meeting tougher CO2 targets
that start to take effect this year.
Volkswagen Group brands will show new
plug-in hybrid versions of their latest compacts, including the VW Golf, Audi A3,
Skoda Octavia and Seat Leon. Renault will
unveil a plug-in Megane compact station
wagon and hatchback. Kia's plug-in hybrid
version of the new Sorento midsize SUV
will make its debut at Geneva. In addition,
the technology also will be prominent on
the BMW and Mercedes stands.

In contrast, fewer new full-electric vehicles will be shown, among them the
BMW i4, Fiat 500e and a battery-powered version of the Renault Twingo.
When paired with a larger battery, plugin hybrid drivetrains can achieve CO2
emissions below 49 grams per kilometer, a threshold that qualifies them for
EU supercredits. That means sales of
those vehicles will count double this
year to help automakers achieve an
overall fleet target of 95g/km.
Automakers see the technology as offering most of the benefits of electric cars
in terms of hitting emissions targets,
without tying customers to an as-yet-incomplete charging network. Plug-in hybrids can also be developed faster than
electric vehicles.

Topping EVs
Plug-in hybrid sales rose 7.1 percent in
Europe last year to 198,853, according
to data from industry association ACEA.
That growth, however, was eclipsed
spectacularly by full-electric vehicles,
which surged 81 percent to 365,372.
Plug-in hybrid sales rallied in the fourth
quarter to rise 75 percent ahead of a
predicted boom in 2020.
Analyst firm LMC Automotive is forecasting that plug-in hybrid sales will soar to
717,000 and a 4 percent market share
this year, while EVs will jump to 652,000
and a 3.6 percent share.
