Europe's top-selling full-electric
cars in 2019; change from 2018

The Jaguar I-Pace climbed two spots to No. 8 in Europe's ranking of fullelectric cars last year with a 94% sales increase.
in 2019. In the UK, full-electric vehicles
reached a 2.7 percent share, up from
1.8 percent in 2019, while sales of plug-in
hybrids rose to 3 percent, up from 1.5 percent. "It's like a switch has been flicked,"
LMC's Kelly said.

Tesla's 'new chapter'
One automaker not worried about CO2
targets is Tesla, which captured the top
spot in the European EV chart with the
Model 3 during the car's first year on the
market. The midsize sedan pushed aside
the traditional EV market leaders, the
Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe, to record
almost 100,000 sales, representing just
over a quarter of the region's EV market.
"Tesla opened a new chapter in the European car industry story," said Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst at JATO
Dynamics. Munoz added, however, that
new launches would swing the pendulum back toward traditional automakers.
"The Model 3 is a sedan, which is not
what consumers in Europe are looking
for," he said. "Upcoming electric SUVs
will for sure take market share."
Audi's e-tron SUV, for example, was the
best-selling EV in January in heavily incentivized Norway, where electric cars
took a 44 percent market share for the
month. But Tesla will strike back in 2021
when it launches the Model Y midsize
SUV in Europe.
The plug-in hybrid sales chart in 2019
was again topped by the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, followed mainly by premium
brands selling familiar models. That is
expected to change this year as volume

automakers, including Renault, Skoda,
Seat, Ford, Kia, Jeep and Toyota, expand
their plug-in hybrid ranges.

EVs to regain lead
Plug-in hybrids may leapfrog full-electric
vehicle sales this year, but that lead
probably won't last, LMC analysts said.
LMC is forecasting that EVs will take a
5.8 percent market share in 2021, rising to
13.5 percent in 2025 as range improves,
cost comes down and more charging stations come online -- and even-stricter
emissions targets come into effect.
The future is less rosy for plug-in hybrids.
Persistent concerns that many owners are
not plugging in and just running on the
combustion engine -- negating the emissions benefits -- have left the technology
vulnerable to country-specific regulation.
The latest blow came from the UK, which
recently said plug-in hybrids will be included in a ban on the sale of new vehicles with
combustion engines starting in 2035.
LMC predicts that sales of plug-in hybrids will reach 1 million across Europe
by 2022, but growth will then slow to
reach 1.23 million with a 6 percent market share by 2025.
For now, however, hybrids are the best way
for automakers to electrify to meet EU targets while gaps in the charging infrastructure are filled, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
CEO Mike Manley told analysts on a results call in February. "After 2025," Manley
added, "full battery-electric technology will
become the norm." ANE
