DELOITTE RESEARCH What's interesting, and more good news for the industry on a global scale, is that women working in the North American automotive industry appear to feel the same. According to a survey of approximately 200 women in North America fielded by Automotive News Europe sister publication Automotive News and Deloitte in autumn 2015, opportunities for challenging and interesting assignments and attractive income/pay also ranked as the top two most important factors influencing their decision to work in the industry. "These similarities create additional advantages for automakers globally in attracting and retaining women," said Joseph Vitale Jr., global automotive leader, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL). "Being able to deliver globally on the consistent factors that are most important to women creates strategic value in a company's ability to put the very best talent wherever they may be needed." Chief among them are perceptions related to the automotive industry's ability to attract and retain women. Simply put, women responding to the surveys in Europe and North America believe other industries do a much better job at attracting and retaining women. Among European respondents, only 13 percent believe the automotive industry is the best among industries like retail, life sciences, consumer products, and technology, media and telecommunications in attracting and retaining women (see graphic, above, right). Another concern is the perception among European survey respondents of different standards for women versus men when it comes to performance and pay. Vitale said that the results from the European and North American surveys illustrate the strategic need to examine and improve how automotive companies compete with other industries in attracting and retaining women. Regarding performance standards, 65 percent of European respondents believe the standards between men and women are not the same, and among those who say the standards are not the same, 55 percent believe standards are higher for women. "Automotive companies are no longer competing among themselves for the best talent in the world," Vitale said. "They are increasingly competing with technology, software and similar kinds of companies, which ultimately intensifies the war for talent. Sixty-eight percent of survey respondents believe there is a pay gap between men and women, of which 97 percent believe men get paid more. Beyond equality in performance standards and pay, a large majority (64 percent) of women in the European automotive industry also believe women are under-represented in their organizations' leadership teams. When asked why, 57 percent say it's because an industry bias exists toward men for leadership positions.
