Chrysler powerhouse in Manitoba moves
into Ontario to buy family GM franchise
Inter-province deal
helps top-selling Morris
auto group expand
operations into Kenora
By GREG LAYSON
WINDSOR CORRESPONDENT
ONE OF MANITOBA'S
biggest and most successful auto
dealers is expanding into neighbouring Ontario and plans to
hire there.
Walt Morris, Manitoba's
top-selling Chrysler dealer for
10 consecutive years, recently bought Kantola GM from
the Kantola family in Kenora,
Ont., and has renamed it
Kenora GM.
"Knowing the Kantola family
throughout the years, the upside
was terrific. They ran a very
good and profitable operation,"
Morris told Automotive News
Canada.
Kantola Chevrolet Buick
GMC had been in the Kantola
family for about 40 years.
"It was good timing for us
and we're appreciative of the
Kantola family for giving us the
opportunity to expand our operations," Morris said.
Morris wouldn't say how
much he paid for the dealership.
He said buying in a neighbouring province didn't present any
hurdles.
NEW AND USED
Morris plans to add a detailing service in the Kenora location and increase the dealer-
Rod Kantola, left, will remain at Kenora GM, now owned by
Walt Morris, middle. His son Brendan will be sales manager.
ship's used-vehicle inventory.
"We really, really want to be
the go-to for people in that area
for pre-owned, and not just GM
product," Morris said.
The detailing centre will
require an additional four or
five employees. He also plans
to hire a technician, an accountant and a couple of salespeople.
Morris said he intended to hire
six to 10 people by mid-October.
Several members of the
Kantola family remain part of
Kenora GM, including General
Sales Manager Rod Kantola.
"It's been a smooth transition. I just knew who Richard
[Kantola] was and what it meant
to turn over his family to me -
and not just his family, but his
business family, because that's
what they are, family," Morris
said.
SUCCESSION IN MOTION
The only major change to
staff has been the appointment
of Walt's son Brendan Morris as
sales manager.
"To see the succession plan
transpire is very encouraging.
I'm proud of him, to see him be
able to take the next step in his
career," Walt Morris said.
Brendan Morris, 25, began
detailing cars for his father
at age 11. He worked in the
lube and oil department, sold
Suzuki ATVs and dirt bikes and
has been a sales manager at
Winnipeg Chrysler Jeep Ram,
all under his dad's watch.
"That's important for him to
have come through those areas,"
Morris said.
"He's a hard worker. He
knows what it's going to take."

Dealership attempted to decertify union
By ERIC FREEDMAN
LEGAL CORRESPONDENT
FOR THE SECOND TIME
this year, a Port Alberni,
B.C., dealership has been
cited for unfair labour practices for how it dealt with the
International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace
Workers (IAMAW).
The president of Pacific
Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd.,
William Pulford, negotiated
directly with two unionized
detailers and "successfully
enticed them with higher pay
and benefits" to take jobs at
his non-unionized Ford store,
the British Columbia Labour
Relations Board said in an
opinion by Vice-Chair Komi
Kandola. He did so to induce
them to leave the union, it
said.
The dealership also
improperly denied the
IAMAW access to the workplace to meet with its members, thus "unreasonably"
interfering with the union's
right and duties as the
employees' exclusive bargaining agent, Kandola held.
IAMAW representative
Paul Pelletreau said the dealership has complied with the
board order, that the two sides
have finished negotiations
and that union members have
ratified a new contract.
In May, the board found
that the store's president committed an unfair practice by
promising raises and other
benefits to union members if
they voted to decertify. - ANC
No big party
for Corolla's 50th,
just trim upgrades
Mild interior and
exterior restyling
and more standard
equipment comes
at a small up-charge
WINDSOR CORRESPONDENT
For the 50th anniversary of
the Corolla, more standard
equipment adds about $295
to the base price.
IN A TRULY CANADIAN
way Toyota seems almost shy
about the 50th anniversary of
its best selling car, the Corolla
compact sedan. There's no big
party and perhaps because
updates for 2017 are limited to
upping the standard content -
including new safety technology - and a mild styling makeover.
Toyota's Safety Sense P
package is now standard on
all models and includes the
pre-collision system with
pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering
assist, dynamic radar cruise
control and automatic high
beams headlights.
The car has redesigned
front bumpers, new headlamp and tail lamp design and
new wheel designs. There's an
upgraded interior with a new
instrument panel and trim.
The price? Just $295 over the
base 2016 model.
Model-specific enhancements to standard equipment
in Canada include:
COROLLA CE: A 3.5-inch
(8.9-centimetre) display, 6.1inch (15.4-centimetre) display
audio system and automatic
bi-LED headlamps and continuously variable transmission.
Base prices (not including destination charges and taxes):
$16,290 with the six-speed manual transmission; $19,390 with
the CVT.
LE: Automatic climate control, bi-LED headlamps and a
windshield wiper de-icer system. Base price: $20,305 with
the six-speed manual transmission; $21,290 with CVT.
SE: Automatic climate control, 4.2-inch (10.7-centime-
tre) display, multi-LED headlamps, unique bumper with
LED daytime running lights,
LED reverse lights. Base prices: $$20,305 with the six-speed
manual; $21,290 with the CVT.
XSE: 17-inch alloy wheels,
rear discs brakes, a power tilt/
slide moon roof, seven-inch
(17.8-centimetre) nav display,
Sirius XM Satellite Radio, an
eight-way power adjustable
driver's seat, leather seat surfaces, smart key with push button start, auto-dimming rear
view mirror with HomeLink
garage door opener and compass, tire-pressure monitoring
and XSE badging. Base price:
$25,210 with CVT.
The Corolla LE ECO has
a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre
four-cylinder engine that
Toyota says will boost performance and fuel efficiency.
Over the Corolla's five-decade history, Toyota has built
43 million units with sales in
more than 150 countries.
Toyota sold 47,199 Corollas
in Canada in 2015. It trailed
only the Hyundai Elantra and
Honda Civic in passenger-car
sales in Canada in 2015.
Through the end of
September 2016, Toyota has
sold 36,224 units, down 2,748
from the same period in 2015
Toyota has built more
than three million Corollas in
Ontario since opening its first
plant in the 1980s. Production
at Toyota's Cambridge plant is
set to end once Toyota moves it
to Mexico in 2019.
Once that happens, all
Corollas sold in North America
will be built at either Toyota's
Mississippi plant or the new
plant in Mexico. - ANC
