A LOOK IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR

AT CANADA'S INDUSTRY
By BILL MCLAUCHLAN

TORONTO CORRESPONDENT

IN HIS DAY, HENRY FORD
churned out millions of vehicles, but he was also a prolific
quote machine. His comment
to the Chicago Tribune daily
newspaper in 1916, that "history is more or less
bunk," though,
wouldn't sit
well with many
Canadians

these days as they mark 150
years since Confederation.
Canada's auto-industry roots
are as old as the nation itself.
The car business mirrors the
country's growth and development through decades past.
The 1867 Seth Taylor
Steam Buggy was designed
and built by watchmaker Seth Taylor of Stanstead,
Que. It hit the road the same
year as Confederation,
though it never went into
production. John Moodie

of Hamilton, Ont., bought a
Winton in early 1898 in the
United States, reputed by the
company to be the second car
sold in North America, which
made him the first Canadian
car owner.

Other pioneers built
steam, electric and gasoline-powered cars through
into the early 20th century: The LeRoy was the first
gas-powered car built in
quantity in 1903; the Russell;
the Tudhope, wiped out by a
fire at its Orillia, Ont., factory
in 1909; the Chatham; and the
Galt, among others.
Few survived, although
notable exceptions were Ford
of Canada, which built its
first Model C in Walkerville,
Ont., near Windsor, in 1904.
It went on to produce the

Model T in 1908. As well, Sam
McLaughlin formed his eponymous car company in 1907
to build McLaughlin-Buicks.
Just over a decade later, he
merged his company with
Chevrolet to create General
Motors of Canada.
Another noteworthy development in that horse-andbuggy era was the founding
of the Toronto Automobile
Dealers Association (TADA)
in 1908, subsequently morphing with the Ontario
Automobile Dealers
Association in 2012 to become
today's Trillium Automobile
Dealers Association.
Nationally, in December 1941,
the Canadian Automobile
Dealers Association (CADA),
then named Federation
of Automobile Dealers
Association of Canada
(FADA) came into being.

CANADA NO. 2 . . . BRIEFLY

A vibrant auto industry
emerged after the First World
War, helped along by the
arrival of Chrysler Canada
in 1925. By the end of the
1920s, mass production meant
cars were more affordable;
Canadians had registered 1.9
million cars and the country became the world's second-largest vehicle producer
after the United States.
Following suspended civilian-car production
in the 1940s for the Second
World War, and imposed
fuel rationing, the domestic auto industry accelerated
again as demand, population
growth and post-war prosperity drove a renewal in sales.
By the mid-1950s new plants
and facilities such as Ford's
Oakville and GM's Oshawa
assembly plants appeared.
Volkswagen quietly sold its
first Beetle in Canada in 1952,
but by 1960 it was the country's third-best-selling car.
Volvo's first foreign assembly plant began in Halifax in
1963, building Amazon models rebranded as the Volvo
Canadian.
Studebaker Canada, which
took over production for all
the company's U.S., Canadian
and world markets at its
Hamilton, Ont., plant in late
1963, shut down operations in

1984 Chrysler's "Magic Wagons,"
the Plymouth Voyager, Dodge
Caravan and Chrysler Town and
Country minivans debut and
change the Canadian
family car market.
1986 Canadian branch of the UAW
splits to the form the CAW, later
named Unifor.
