service, the car would oscillate between 2,000 and 3,000
horsepower, depending on
adjustments to its turbocharger system.

AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCED ITS OWN
country-wide EV-charger network plan
just one week after Canada did, and with
a projected cost that's much lower.
Of course, Australians don't have as
many square kilometres to cover; 7.7 million to Canada's 9.9.
Natural Resources Canada is giving an $8-million "repayable contribution" toward developing a $17.3-million network of 34 electric-vehicle fastcharging stations. The stations will be
installed about 100 kilometres apart
along 3,000 kilometres of the TransCanada Highway spanning Ontario and
Manitoba.
Meanwhile, the Queensland govern-

ment said it will invest CDN $3 million
on 18 charging stations along 1,800 kilometres of highway on the country's eastern seaboard.
That means Canada's span costs about
$5,666 per kilometre while Australia will
spend about $1,666 per kilometre.
Both countries are developing coastto-coast networks to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.
The first phase of the Australian
Electric Super Highway is to be operational in the next six months and will be
free of charge to electric-vehicle drivers.
Canadian officials haven't said yet
how much EV drivers will pay to use the

Fittingly, hybrid ambulances
seen as the healthier choice
It's Easter bunnies and jaguar
cubs for the E-Pace team
EMPLOYEES AT MAGNA
International's contract-vehicle-manufacturing facility in Graz, Austria, will be
playing Easter bunnies of
sorts as they assemble the
new Jaguar E-Pace.
Jaguar design chief Ian
Callum explained that his
team had some fun while
bringing the luxury compact utility vehicle to production by planting Easter eggs
throughout the car for Magna
employees building it on the
line. Production begins in the
fourth quarter.
At the car's reveal in
London in mid-July, Callum

showed a pair of Easter eggs
as fun and unobtrusive art
elements.
First was a silhouette of
a jaguar and its cub on the
prowl along the base of the
vehicle's windscreen. The
cub's shape also forms the
puddle lights projected on the
ground at night.
Callum said the cub logo
represents the new vehicle as
the baby of the Jaguar family.
The E-Pace is the second
model Magna will contract
manufacture for Jaguar, joining the upcoming all-electric

Electric-hybrid vehicles not just
for environmentally friendly
daily commuters anymore

Ltd., a specialty-vehicle manufacturer, is building two hybrid ambulances for service in
Oxford County, near London, Ont. The company claims it will be the first time in Canada

that an electric-hybrid ambulance sees service
in a municipal fleet.
Crestline said production of the two
Fleetmax XL3 Hybrid ambulances is under
way at its Saskatoon, Sask., location. The manufacturer said the XL3 Hybrid System integrates with original-equipment powertrains,
and uses regenerative braking to help fleets
increase fuel economy by 25 per cent, reduce
fuel costs by 20 per cent and lower carbon-dioxide emissions.
Solar panels installed on the roof will help
power onboard life-saving equipment as well
as the batteries, thereby enhancing economy.
Oxford County Paramedic Services "is committed to doing what we can to help improve
the environment. As first responders, we see
the value every day in creating a healthy environment for residents. So if there is a new technology that will help reduce our environmental impact without compromising patient care
or our ability to respond, we will explore it,"
County Manager of Paramedic Services Ben
Addley said in a statement.
The new Fleetmax XL3 Hybrid ambulances will be shown for the first time in Ottawa at
the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs
conference, Sept. 26-28. - ANC
