Some suburbs have shopping centres, Barrhaven has...
DEALERSHIP DRIVE
A cluster of stores is growing in an area
where it seemingly should not, but why?
By ROBERT BOSTELAAR
O T TAWA C O R R E S P O N D E N T
THE OTTAWA SUBURB OF BARRHAVEN
was long the sleepiest of bedroom communities, separated by a broad greenbelt from
jobs, services and, but for one rural dealership, car retailers.
Three new dealerships have opened
in recent months and four others, plus a
standalone body shop, are under construction or before municipal planners.
The cluster of car stores - one of the
largest in the capital - is part of a broader business influx lured by Barrhaven's
above-average incomes and proximity to
major highways.
But this was no sudden awakening.
"I started looking for automotive land
and talking to the city about automotive
land well over 10 years ago," said Harry
Mews, president of the Myers Automotive
Group and himself a resident of the southern suburb.
His group's Barrhaven Toyota opened
in April 2016 as the first entry on a street
christened Dealership Drive. Next door, the
largest Hyundai outlet in Ontario, another
Myers project, is getting finishing touches
for an October opening.
Barrhaven Honda, built by Ottawabased Dilawri Auto (not connected to the
B.C.-based Dilawri Group that is Canada's
largest dealership operator), is set to open
soon. Other spots are earmarked for a
Myers Carstar collision shop and a new
home for Dan Murphy Ford, part of the Pat
Butler Group. The Ford store will move
from its current location about 10 kilometres south in the village of Manotick, Ont.
Across Highway 416 on a street called
Motor Works Private are Mazda and
Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram stores opened
this year by the S. Dilawri Automotive
Group (again, not related to Dilawri Group)
and a Nissan outlet being built for another
major national player, AutoCanada Inc.
FRUSTRATING DELAYS
Mews, whose group operates 12 dealerships across the capital, said that he's frustrated by delays finding property that the
City of Ottawa would zone for car retailing,
especially when others had less trouble.
