* JUNE 2018

2019 SUBARU FORESTER:

One of the automaker's most popular models will undergo major changes,
and it will be bigger and have
more cargo and passenger
room. The current 170- and
250-horsepower four-cylinder
engines will be dropped in
favour of a new 182-horse
powerplant. Also gone is the
base six-speed manual transmission, leaving only a continuously variable unit for all trim levels.

2019 AUDI Q8: It's based on the Q7 platform,

but the new Q8 is slightly shorter. Also unlike the
Q7, which has three rows of seats, the Q8 has only
two. Although it seems elegant and sporty (it was
styled to look like a coupe), an optional adaptive
air suspension "makes the Q8 a capable choice for
offroad terrain." Audi designers say they essentially wanted to create a utility version of the
premium A8 sedan. The Q8 launches in the fourth
quarter of 2018.

2019 LEXUS ES: Toyota's luxury brand unleashes a
revamped midsize sedan, still based on the Camry platform, with dimensional increases inside and out. The
ES 350's standard 3.5-litre V-6 gains 32 horsepower
and 19 pound-feet of torque (to 302 and 267,
respectively). The ES 350h hybrid's output increases to 215 horsepower from
200. Lexus says it will be slightly more
fuel-efficient than the outgoing hybrid.

PORSCHE TAYCAN:

The Mission E was the working title for
Porsche's first electric car, but the production model will be called the Taycan. The
company says the name means "lively
young horse" and with 600-plus horsepower,
this four-door four-seater will be just that.
Porsche claims the two electric motors will
push the Taycan to 100 km/h from rest in 3.5
seconds. When the Mission E was first shown,
Porsche said it had earmarked about US $1 billion to
build it. The stated range is 300 miles (500 kilometres) and
with new 800-volt charging technology the Taycan can reportedly
receive an 80-per-cent charge in about 15 minutes.

MAGNA, RENESAS PLAN CHEAPER 3D
CANADIAN GLOBAL SUPPLIER
Magna International is partnering
with Japan-based Renesas Electronics

Corp. to develop a cost-efficient 3D
surround-view system designed for
entry-level and midrange vehicles.
The companies say the new camera
will allow automakers to make the 3D
camera technology more broadly available. An unnamed European automaker will be the first to integrate the system into a future vehicle,
the companies said in a
joint statement.
The technology will
combine Magna's 3D surround view camera system and Renesas' system-on-chip technology, which integrates the
camera into the vehicle's computer
systems.
Magna calls it "a significant
upgrade to the bird's-eye view offered
by existing parking assist systems."
Drivers can adjust the view of their
surroundings with the interface, while
object detection alerts drivers about
obstacles in their path.
The system "minimizes integration time and development costs, making the system an easy, cost-efficient
option for automakers," Magna said.

fleet, the two companies said.
FCA and Google Waymo have
begun developing Level 4 (fully autonomous) cars to be available on some
FCA premium cars by about 2023, FCA
executives said on June 1 when presenting the automaker's 2018-2022 business plan.
Waymo and FCA said
the two companies are
beginning discussions
with FCA about potentially
licensing Waymo's autonomous operations technology for use in a future FCA
vehicle that would be available to retail customers.
The partnership is an expansion of
the relationship between Waymo and
FCA, which began in May 2016 with
the purchase of 100 Pacifica hybrid
minivans for use in Waymo's test fleet.
To date, Waymo has purchased 600 of
the minivans, which are built in FCA's
Windsor, Ont., Assembly Plant.

BMW ROLLS OUT WIRELESS CHARGING
THE NEW SYSTEM FROM BMW
consists of the GroundPad installed on
the floor of a garage or parking space.
When a car equipped with the matching CarPad on its underside parks in
position, the system automatically
starts charging.
The connection is made through
inductance: current flowing in the
GroundPad induces current in the
CarPad, which then charges the car's
battery.
BMW says the system can charge
the BMW 530e iPerformance in 3.5
hours.
The system was launched in
Germany in May, with subsequent rollouts coming to the United
Kingdom, North America, China and
Japan. - ANC
