THE BIG BLUE FISH
THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY
A Ford pickup that sank
during a Northern excursion
was finally reeled in
THE TRANSGLOBAL CAR EXPEDITION,
a group of overland Arctic adventurers, has
recovered a Ford F-150 that fell through thin
ice and sank in the Arctic Ocean on March 23.
The expedition was on an excursion to
Resolute Bay, Nunavut - 2,100 kilometres
north of Winnipeg - from Yellowknife,
N.W.T, when the mishap took place. A
12-member team returned to Gjoa Haven
in August to retrieve the vehicle, the
Nunatsiaq News reported. The pickup was
about 11 metres below the surface and had
shifted four metres since sinking.
Divers attached flotation devices to the
vehicle to bring it to the surface, and then a
helicopter hoisted it onto land.
Andrew Comrie-Picard, a member of the
recovery team, told the Nunatsiaq News that
little fluid had leaked out.
" We went over all of the reservoirs [in the
vehicle] - the fuel tank, the oil pan, the radiator,
coolant, battery, transmission - all
these things. . . . We estimate that less than
three litres of fluid escaped the vehicle. "
The goal of the 16-person Transglobal Car
Expedition team - with Canadian, U.S.,
Russian, Ukrainian and Icelandic members
- is to complete the first wheeled vertical
circumnavigation of the globe. The
40,000-kilometre journey will begin in 2024
and take the team through 42 countries.

Buyer's guide aims
to answer question:
Is it time to plug in?
THE CANADIAN
Automobile Association (CAA)
has developed an online-based
EV Buyer's
Guide that
the organization
says will
help Canadians
determine
which battery-powered
vehicles
best
suit their needs.

TOYOTA MOTOR MANUFACTURING
Canada (TMMC) has built its 10-millionth vehicle,
a red 2022 Lexus NX 350h that rolled off the
Cambridge, Ont., production line on Aug. 12.
TMMC, which began in 1988 with the
Corolla small car, has two production lines in
Cambridge and one in Woodstock, Ont., employing
more than 8,500 people. The plants currently
produce the Corolla and the RAV4 and Lexus
RX and NX crossovers, with an annual production
capacity of 500,000 vehicles.
In a statement, TMMC President Frank Voss
said employees have been " trusted to build
some of the most popular vehicles in North
America. "

The number of vehicles automakers are on pace
to sell in Canada in 2022, according to U.S.-based
AutoForecast Solutions.
The interactive tool includes
comprehensive information on
about 90 electrified models available
in Canada today. It also
includes articles and a page that
provides answers to common
questions that Canadians have
about EV ownership, charging
costs, battery life and more.

CAA spells out
the ABCs of EVs
A recent study conducted by
KPMG and cited by the CAA
indicates that seven out of 10
Canadian consumers expect
their next vehicle to be an EV.
The organization says Canadian
EV market share also grew from
roughly five per cent in 2021 to
7.7 per cent in the first quarter
of this year,
evidence of
the rapidly
rising popularity
of
eco-friendly
vehicles.
Ian Jack,
the CAA's
vice-president
of public affairs, said the EV
Buyer's Guide is intended to serve
as " a one-stop, neutral source of
information for those considering
an EV for their next vehicle " as
more Canadians consider replacing
their gasoline- or diesel-powered
vehicle with a hybrid, plugin
or pure EV. - ANC
Customer needed an alternator
but lost a catalytic converter
Dealership wouldn't
cover the cost of the
stolen parts, but the
automaker did
HYUNDAI CANADA HAS COME
to the aid of a customer who was
the victim of theft while her vehicle
was parked at
an outside lot of an
Ontario dealership.
The incident
occurred in August
when Diane Reid
had her Hyundai
Veracruz towed
to Orangeville Hyundai, 80 kilometres
north of Toronto, to have
the alternator replaced. She then
received a call that the catalytic
converter had been stolen.
According to Reid, Phil
Richards, dealer principal
of Orangeville Hyundai, told
her the store would not pay to
replace the part, even though
the theft occurred on dealership
property. He suggested she file
an insurance claim.
Reid told her story to Global
News, drawing widespread media
attention, and she contacted
Hyundai Canada for help.
In response, the automaker
agreed to tow Reid's vehicle
to a different dealership -
Performance Hyundai in nearby
Brampton - to have the parts
replaced. Hyundai Canada also
provided a rental
vehicle for a week,
and a $500 gas card.
" [Hyundai
Canada] did a fantastic
job, " Reid
told Global News
after picking up her
vehicle from the Brampton store.
" They went above and beyond. "
A representative for Orangeville
Hyundai told Global News three
catalytic converters were stolen
from vehicles in a single month
earlier this year. Such thefts have
become increasingly common in
recent years because of rising prices
for the precious metals within
them, such as platinum, rhodium
and palladium. - ANC
