MAZDA ICONIC SP CONCEPT: The automaker has fused a
new version of its legendary rotary engine - last seen in the
RX-8 sporty car - with the styling of the popular MX-5
roadster in a concept designed for an electrified
future. The sleek Iconic SP has the profile of
the MX-5, with a low hood and low centre
of gravity. The gasoline rotary engine is
centre-mounted in the car and serves as
a power generator for an electric motor
that turns the wheels of this two-seater.
At the concept's launch during the recent
Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, Mazda did not
release possible production plans.
2024 BMW X2: The automaker's second-generation
small utility vehicle is
bigger than the previous model and gets a
sportier looking front end. The base variant
in Canada is the X2 xDrive28i, which
has a 241-horsepower TwinPower Turbo
four-cylinder engine. The more potent
four-cylinder in the M35i xDrive delivers
312 horsepower. The automaker debuted
the X2 at the Japan Mobility Show in
Tokyo in October. The car is expected to
arrive in Canada in March, although pricing
has not been announced.

HONDA PRELUDE CONCEPT:
More than two decades after retiring
the Prelude in Canada, Honda
is reimagining the sporty coupe
for the electric era. The automaker
showed a concept version of the
revived nameplate at the recent
Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, and
plans to have a production version
by mid-decade. The Prelude concept
has an improved version of Honda's
two-motor gasoline-electric hybrid
system. A production version is
slated to be sold in Japan, with
other markets currently under consideration.
INFINITI
VISION QE CONCEPT: Nissan Motor Co.'s upscale brand has
yet to release an electric vehicle, but at the recent Japan Mobility Show
in Tokyo, it previewed the Vision Qe concept that will " set the tone " for
Infiniti's inaugural EV. The fastback sedan has a muscular-looking front
and sleek rear styling, which set the car apart from many competitors that
opted to first go electric with midsize utility vehicles. Despite the reveal, a
production version of the battery-electric Infiniti is not scheduled to go on
sale before 2026.
TOYOTA EPU ELECTRIC PICKUP CONCEPT:
Sized similarly to the Ford Maverick, the
Toyota EPU (Electric PickUp) concept has standard
all-wheel drive and an innovative tailgate
that allows for toversized cargo. Three years
in the making, the vehicle was unveiled at the
Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo in October.
Toyota shared few performance details, however.
The addition of a compact pickup would
likely please North American Toyota dealers,
but the EPU has not yet been given the green
light.
