Toronto's No. 1 claim brings shame
A new top-10 list
highlights just how
bad auto theft has
become in Ontario
NOT SURPRISINGLY, THE
Insurance Bureau of Canada said
Toronto has the highest claims to
replace stolen vehicles. Canada's
most populous city racked up a
staggering $371.8 million in claims
in 2023, ahead of No. 2 Brampton,
which recorded claims worth $93.2
million. Mississauga was No. 3 at
$90.0 million in claims. For the
first time, Ontario surpassed $1 billion
in claims in a year, the bureau
increase in auto-theft claims and
auto-theft claims costs, " said Amanda
Dean, the Insurance Bureau's
vice-president, Ontario and Atlantic.
The costs " speak to the growing
severity of the auto-theft crisis
in Ontario, a crisis that is having
a material impact on auto-insurance
premiums, to say nothing of
the concern and trauma it is causing
Ontarians. "

HYUNDAI'S MINDFUL METHOD
TO SUPPORT YOUTH
A $3.1-MILLION FUNDRAISER FOR THE
Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation
in Ontario has been jump-started by a
$500,000 contribution from Hyundai Canada.
The funds will be used to build a child and
adolescent mental-health inpatient unit at
the hospital, located on the eastern edge of
Markham, Ont. The unit will have six beds,
filling a critical gap in child and youth mental-health
support in the York and Durham
region, Hyundai Canada said in a June 4
release.

PBS Systems helps
prepare students for
careers in automotive
AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN A
Calgary software provider and
Georgian College's Automotive
Business School of Canada means
students hired at many Canadian
dealerships should slide into their
roles already familiar with the software
in use.
The agreement with PBS
Systems " provides software
licences and expert instruction on
a system many students will use
when they graduate. They'll hit the
ground running, " said Jason Dale,
executive director of the school,
located in Barrie, Ont., about 100
" Supporting today's youth for their success
tomorrow is one of the core tenets
of Hyundai's larger ethos of 'progress for
humanity,' " said Kirk Merrett, Hyundai
Canada's director of human resources.
The expansion is expected to reduce wait
times for inpatient treatment and enable
young people in crisis to access care closer
to home, the release said. It also helps fill a
gap caused by an increasing need for pediatric
mental-health support, the hospital said.

As part of the five-year deal, students
will learn the latest iteration
of the PBS software suite. Students
will learn to use digital tools such
as vehicle telematics, Bluelink connectivity,
transparent e-commerce
vehicle purchasing, mobile app
workflow integrations and dashboard

P.E.I.: a tiny
province with
a big problem
CANADA'S SMALLEST
province ranks as the most dangerous
province or territory in
Canada to drive, according to
data compiled by the Ontario
personal-injury law firm
Preszler Injury Lawyers.
Crunching Transport Canada
figures from 2021, the firm found
that P.E.I. experienced 10.5 deaths
and 287 injuries per 100,000 population
in 2021. Not far behind was
New Brunswick, with 8.6 deaths
but 342.7 injuries per 100,000 population.
The
safest was Nunavut, with
2.6 deaths and 40.9 injuries per
100,000 population in the same
year.
" By using this data to understand
which provinces and territories
in Canada suffer from
the highest numbers of deaths
and injuries from car crashes,
policymakers can provide targeted
safety improvements, "
the law firm said in a recent
