The dealers association sponsors the national competition in conjunction with the New York auto show, and this year also sponsored
the winning team. Twelve automakers provided the vehicles for the
competition.
"We try to bring classroom learning - the science, the technology,
the math [students] are doing - and apply it to real-life settings,"
Gazzillo said.
Watch and learn
The winners of this year's contest are enrolled in the auto technology program at the Academy at Ward Technical Center in Riverhead,
N.Y. They told Fixed Ops Journal they developed a taste for working on
vehicles by observing older relatives.
"Ever since I was little, I remember watching my grandfather working on cars," DeLuca said. "For Christmas once, he got me a jack stand
and a little jack, and he would let me work on his cars - Thunderbirds."
Wagner said he followed in the footsteps of a cousin who is an Audi
enthusiast and studied automotive tech. "I'm rebuilding the turbo in
my car," also an Audi, Wagner said.
The students' instructor, Michael O'Hara, said that competition
winners "can write their own ticket" to college.
With O'Hara coaching, Ward Technical also won the national competition in 2013. He said the contest helps him to update his curriculum to stay current with auto technology.
Thirty teams made it to this year's finals, among hundreds of teams
from technical high schools that took part in regional and state competitions.
The contest awarded prizes and scholarships totaling more than $3
million, including tool sets for all national finalists. O'Hara noted that
the tool sets are especially valuable because dealerships generally expect technicians to provide their own tools.
O'Hara said: "I spent 28 years in dealerships, and [the competition]
really mimics real-life complaints."
