SHOP TALK

We asked fixed ops managers: Does your shop hold
regular staff meetings? How often? What do you discuss?
"We are one of the few service departments that do not
hold regular staff meetings. I prefer to send out daily team
emails showcasing the previous day's results and offering
words of encouragement, praise or criticism, depending on
the situation. I also send emails when it comes to
pertinent work-related items from the manufacturer or
current departmental concerns. It's much more suitable in
our fast-paced business climate to have impromptu one-onone discussions when necessary in the service drive, in the
shop or behind closed doors on topics such as customer
retention, CSI, production and individual performance."
MARK WILLIAMSON
Service director
Love Chevrolet, Columbia, S.C.

"I hold weekly staff
meetings with
every member of
my team in their
subgroups,
including advisers,
technicians,
express service
and [business
development
center]. The meetings allow me to make
sure everyone can visualize the mission,
know their part and, most important, tell
me if they need anything. I tell the team
we can discuss anything they want
without fear of reprisal. We discuss the
team's performance, goals, training,
warranty policy and our overall mission.
Staff meetings are not the answer to
staff engagement but offer an
opportunity for you to prove you care for
them and demonstrate transparency,
which is the key to employee retention."
ROB MOORE
Service director
Toyota of Greenville, in South Carolina

AUGUST 2019

"We meet every Friday from
7:55 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and
go over service workbench,
shop hours, service sales
dollars and shop tool
needs. The comptroller and
general manager attend, as
well as most of the techs
and the advisers."
PAUL AMATO
Service manager
Serra Buick-GMC-Cadillac,
Washington Township, Mich.

"We do a quick staff
meeting weekly. We
will discuss shop
safety, all process
opportunities that
may increase
efficiencies as well
as any tool or
equipment needs
that we may have in
the shop."
TIM HOLLIFIELD
Fixed ops director
Dan Cummins ChevroletBuick and Dan Cummins
Chrysler-Dodge-JeepRam, both in Paris, Ky.

"We cover things that need
attention, such as tools and
equipment and any possible
change in procedures. We
talk about productivity.
These meetings take
approximately 15 minutes
once a week."
TOM MARQUIS
Fixed ops director
Washington Chevrolet,
in Pennsylvania
