battery-electric vehicles. With no oil
and other fl uids to check and
change, no cooling systems to service,
no rusty exhaust systems to replace,
and other routine maintenance
to carry out - and with the
vehicle's operating system updates
coming over the air - fi xing broken
parts and tire and wheel services
likely will be the main reasons customers
will look to dealerships for
service. For everything else, service
might have to come to the vehicle.
Th e pandemic demonstrated that
consumers like the convenience of
not having to physically visit the
dealership for service. Pickup and
delivery can be profi table, and it also
can boost sales of new and used vehicles.
Now, with a growing number
of independent businesses bringing
service to the customer, it's only a
matter of time before more dealers
realize they must roll out their own
mobile maintenance and repair
vans.
Hunter Engineering already has
developed specialized wheel service
equipment, tire changers and balancers
designed for mobile service.
Th ey are lightweight, consume less
power and are designed to be quickly
mounted and unmounted in a
mobile service van. Th at way, a fi xed
ops director can reconfi gure the van
based on the type of service required,
says Pete Liebetreu, Hunter's
vice president of marketing.
Th e new machines, however, don't
have as many features as the static
tire
changers
and balancers
in
stores. For instance, the tech will
have to manually load and unload
the tires from the machines.
Liebetreu believes dealers who offer
mobile service will need to be
fl exible.
