Materials maker Solvay will be
looking to the future at K 2022.
" We need to be at the forefront
of thinking ahead, " Materials
President Carmelo Lo Faro said in
a recent video interview. " When
we're talking to our customers,
we're listening to their needs and
working to address them, but
we're also thinking about what
they'll need 15 years from now. "
At K 2022, Brussels-based Solvay
will focus on materials aimed
at e-mobility, resource effi ciency,
eco-friendly solutions, health care
and hyperconnectivity.
In aerospace, Solvay has worked
with British fi rm Vertical Aerospace
to supply composites and
adhesives for the VX4, the company's
electric vertical takeoff and
landing (eVTOL) aircraft. For the
automotive market, Solvay materials
are found in electric mobility,
thermal management, lightweighting
and battery applications.
In lifesaving applications,
Solvay
is introducing UV-C
stabilizers that protect
polyolefi n surfaces
Flexible
and effi cient concepts for the challenges of a

from degradation
caused by
exposure to UV-C
light, which is used
to fi ght COVID-19 and hospital-acquired
infections. The fi rm's medical-grade
polymers are used in
medical devices and equipment,
surgical
instruments,
implantables
and hemodialysis, as well as
in pharmaceutical packaging.
" Medical is an area that will
continue to grow, as people get
more access to care in emerging
countries like China and India, "
Lo Faro said.
Sustainability also has " moved
the needle in the last few years, "
he added. " It's where our customers
operate. "
At K 2022, Solvay is launching
high-performance products with
a reduced carbon footprint for applications
ranging from automotive
and appliances to electronics.
Following the mass-balance
method, Solvay will track and trace
the fl ow of certifi ed circular and/or
renewable materials through the
entire value chain, offi cials said.
This will enable the fi rm's new ReCycle
MB specialty polymers portfolio
to play a role in responsible
sourcing and the move to a sustainable
circular economy.
Solvay
recently
announced
plans to boost production of
Amodel-brand polyphthalamide
by 15 percent in Augusta, Ga.
Lo Faro described Amodel as " a
state-of-the-art polymer that can
solve challenges with chemical
resistance, dimensional stability
and surface fi nish. "
Offi cials previously said Amodel
has played a critical role in replacing
metal in the auto industry
for more than 30 years and
that the material is increasingly
being used in electric motors
and power electronics for battery-electric
vehicles.

The Augusta site
has decreased its global
warming potential
by 30 percent since
2013. All electricity
sourced by the site
is renewable and the
plant has reduced water
consumption by 15
percent and nonsustainable waste
by 30 percent vs. a 2018 baseline.
Earlier this year, Solvay announced
plans for major capacity
additions for Solef-brand
polyvinylidene fl uoride in France
and China. The fi rm also has increased
capacity for long-fi ber
compounds in Belgium and expanded
a U.S. research and development
center in Alpharetta, Ga.
Solvay employs more than
23,000 worldwide and posted
sales of $11 billion in 2021. In
March, the fi rm announced plans
to split itself into two public companies,
including one making
specialty materials that would
include plastics and composites.
