Compounders show off ways to improve resins at K
By Frank Esposito
Plastics News Staff
Compounders including Avient
Corp., Modern Dispersions
Inc. and Kraiburg TPE will be at
K 2022 with many new ways to
improve resins.
New products offered by Avient
of Avon Lake, Ohio, include
Cesa Nox-brand polyolefi n antioxidants
for recycling. Offi cials
said these sustainable materials
are designed to improve the customer
experience of working with
post-consumer (PCR) content for
materials used in packaging.
" Avient is fully committed
to increasing opportunities
to expand the use of recycled
polymers, addressing any barriers
that arise either during
the recycling process or when
customers want to incorporate
PCR content into existing or
new applications, " said Norbert
Merklein, vice president of the
Europe, Middle East and Africa
regions of Avient's Color, Additives
and Inks unit.
The new additives are based
on a special formulation that protects
post-consumer polyolefi ns
against oxidation, which can lead
to defects like black spots, gels
and discoloration. The antioxidant
can be added to post-consumer
resin early in the recycling
process or incorporated
in
virgin resin to
prepare it
for
future recycling.
Avient
also
Mitchell
has added two
new grades of
reSound RECbrand
thermoplastic
elastomers
(TPEs).
Both grades
are formulated
with polyvinyl butyral (PVB)
recycled from automotive glass
by Shark Solutions of Denmark.
Also announced are two new
Edgetek PKE-brand polyketone
grades with nonhalogen flame
retardants.
Applications for reSound REC
TPEs include automotive exterior
and under-hood components,
while Edgetek PKE NHFR
formulations are designed for
electric vehicle components, including
connectors.
" We are closing the loop by
incorporating recycled PVB
from vehicle glass into our reSound
REC TPEs, which then
go back into other automotive
applications, as well as
consumer products including
grips and handles for personal
care items, " said Matt Mitchell,
specialty engineered materials
global marketing director. He
added that with Edgetek polyketone
grades, Avient offers alternatives
to nylon that can lower
carbon footprints.
Modern highlights
nanocarbons
Modern Dispersions of
Leominster, Mass., is highlighting
its latest developmental
work with nanocarbons to
boost the performance of masterbatch
concentrates and comviscoZERO
-
processing PP,
PE, PET & PS!
pound solutions.
Officials said the firm continues
to undertake research and
development work with new
grades of carbon black, graphite
and nanocarbons to improve
properties such as color, UV resistance
and electrical and thermal
conductivity. They added
that because of the lower filler
loadings required with nanocarbons,
better physical properties
can be achieved with these
types of compounds.
" We've had a lot of interest from
OEMs and processors and our ongoing
project sampling is promising, "
said Jan Kozma, sales and
marketing vice president.
One of the developmental
grades contains
graphene
oxide, which
is
being
tested
to measure
property enhancement
features
including
electrical and
thermal conductivity,
increased
tensile
strength and
improved barrier
properties. This grade is targeted
for fi bers and fi lms.
At K 2022, Modern Dispersions
also will showcase its black
masterbatches, wood-polymer
composites and color concenHofmann
trates.
The company has decades
of experience in producing
materials that provide UV
protection, FDA compliance,
high loadings, low-tint performance
and customizability.
Kraiburg and
recycled content
Kraiburg TPE of Waldkraiburg,
Germany, will present new products
including Thermolast R
recycling compounds. The new
materials include compound
solutions for the consumer, industrial
and automotive markets.
They can contain up to 41 percent
recycled content.
" [Thermolast R] combines a lot
of things we've been working on
for the past 16 months and, in a
way, it stands for the transformation
[Kraiburg TPE] has undergone
for some time now, " EMEA
Director Monika Hofmann said.
" The focus is on the fact that,
in terms of a sustainable portfolio,
we've continuously but surely
developed in a transparent, honest
way and closely to customers'
needs, " she added.
Offi cials added that, in addition
to sustainable solutions, Kraiburg
TPE is working on TPEs with
added values, such as thermally
or electrically conductive TPEs,
smooth-touch TPEs and high-resistance
TPEs for cosmetics.
