Steer looks to green markets

Extrusion equipment supplier
Steer Engineering is continuing to
expand its footprint globally with
a new application development
center, as it brings an expanded
technology lineup to K 2022.
The Bengaluru, India-based
firm recently opened a new
development center in China
while upgrading existing technology
centers in Japan and the
United States.
" We opened a new ADC in
Shanghai at the end of June and
have upgraded process technology
centers in Tokyo and Ohio, "
said Nitin Gupta, global CEO of
Steer Engineering Pvt. Ltd., who
joined the company earlier this
year. The Japan and U.S. locations
were upgraded this year,
he said.
He said the Shanghai center has
seven employees, a mix of scientists
and technicians. It gives the
company four ADCs globally, , including
one in India.
He said the upgrades will let
the company better demonstrate
technology.
" China offers huge growth potential
in the areas of biodegradable
and recycling applications, "
Gupta said. " Now all of our ADCs
are upgraded to demonstrate
Steer's patented fractional geometry
and fractional lobe process
technologies. "
The company also said its
Omega series 30H extruder is
now available in the U.S. market.
" Steer is now ready to serve
its partners in the U.S. region
for critical and important projects, "
he said.
The company works in a
number of markets, including
plastics, pharmaceuticals, food
and nutraceuticals, biomaterials
and biorefining. It's also
been focusing this year on biomass-related
applications and
plastic
recycling technology,
Gupta said.
The company said it has a
new research initiative to develop
several biomass resin applications
as an alternative to
oil-based plastics, including in
consumer markets.
It said it's working on extrusion
technology to commercialize
compounds of inedible rice and
polyolefi ns, which could be used
to make trash bags, shopping
bags, plastic cutlery and toys.
The company said it recently
supplied three of its Omega
60 extruders to Biomass Resin
Holdings Co. Ltd in Japan.
" In the long term, these
products significantly reduce
plastic waste through environment-friendly
polymers, " Gupta
said.
The company is also researching
applying its twinscrew
co-rotating extrusion
technology to PET recycling
and disposal and is working on
building a compact recycling
platform that it says would
compress an entire recycling
plant into equipment about the
size of a household refrigerator.
The platform, called SAFEReCYCLER,
would likely to hit the
market later in 2022.
Steer said the equipment could
process commingled thin-walled
and multilayered plastics, including
fi lms, fabrics, laminates and
personal protective equipment
in health care facilities.
The product was featured as
one of more than 1,000 cleantech
applications on the website
of the Solar Impulse Foundation.
At K 2022, Gupta said the
company is also presenting new
automation equipment.
" We are showcasing our allnew
electrical and automation
system Titan 32, along with a
lab-size extruder, " he said.
